I think we’re witnessing a bubble bursting in real time, gentlemen. Car flippers are finding themselves in a tough position where they might need to come to terms with the market having already readjusted to some extent while they weren’t looking.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility that cars such as this never-driven Challenger Demon 170 might soon be selling at or near window sticker. That’s really going to hurt those that were hoping to ride this inflation wave long-term, or at least for a couple of years. Yet, the market has spoken, and we’ve been seeing a lot of “in demand” models failing to meet their reserve at auction, which let’s face it, is extremely satisfying from a customer’s standpoint.

The listing for that Go Mango Challenger Demon 170 from yesterday was pulled because the seller wasn’t happy with $162,000 for a car that cost $125,000 originally. That car and this one here are very similar. They both have delivery miles, yet the highest bid for this Destroyer Grey example maxed out at $149,170, which would have already represented a significant profit over its $116,000 sticker price.

Alas, the dealer didn’t bite, but good luck getting more for a car that features both the front and rear passenger seat delete option. Not everyone wants to spend this much money on a Challenger that you can only use at the drag strip and never (ever) use for giving anyone else a ride. It’s a very focused, yet very limited specification.

Let’s dive a little deeper into the spec though, starting with that previously mentioned Destroyer Grey colorway, which I also think may be contributing to this vehicle’s downfall. It’s not the best color for a Challenger, is it? Plus, there’s very little contrast between the body panels and the black accents.

Anyway, other visual highlights include the “Alcohol Injected” lettering on the hood-scoop bezel, the optional satin black graphic for the roof and trunk lid, Air-Catcher HID headlights, the SRT Performance rear spoiler with an integrated rearview camera, plus black 18” front and 17” rear alloy wheels wearing Mickey Thompson ET Street R rubber.

Meanwhile, the interior has only one seat (upholstered in black cloth with white stitching), but also carbon fiber trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker Alpine sound system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, plus a dashboard plaque that identifies this Demon 170 as car #1428.

Of course, you all know what’s going on underneath the hood. There’s a 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine, working alongside a 3.0-liter supercharger. Floor the throttle on regular E10 fuel and you’ll be putting down 900 horsepower and 810 lb-ft of torque. However, on E85, you gain access to 1,025 horsepower and 945 lb-ft of torque. This is a sub-9 second car over the standing quarter mile.
