Besides putting on a great show each year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed is also the scene of some unfortunate accidents. Most of the time no victims are reported, but a lot of the cars that get wrecked are very rare and expensive. Rather unfortunate for us motorheads...
The latest vehicle in need of a rhinoplasty after a Goodwood hill run is a 1986 Lotus 98T Formula One race car. Developed in F1's infamous Turbo Era, the 98T is basically a monster on four wheels. It has no less than 1,200 HP coming from the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that needs a lot of experience to be put to the ground.
The designated driver obviously lacked the skills and ended up driving the vehicle in the bales that surround the Goodwood course. You might be tempted to think the vehicle had a soft nose "dive", but the impact was enough to cause more than just a bit of damage (notice the wheel flying off).
The Lotus 98T was driven by Ayrton Senna and Johnny Dumfries in the 1986 Formula One season, when the British company finished third in the Constructors' Championship. Senna scored two wins behind his No. 12 "John Player Special" liveried car.
