Introduced in the Middle Kingdom in April 2018, the Kamiq arrived in Europe at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show with significant changes both inside and out. Turning our attention back to China, Skoda has another subcompact crossover in the pipeline for the most populous country in the world.
Enter the Kamiq GT, the fifth utility vehicle Skoda will sell on the Chinese market. Inspired by the Vision GT concept car and Kodiaq GT, the newcomer will be revealed in the flesh on November 4th in Tianjin.
Exterior design sketches for the Kamiq GT reveal European styling, sequential turn signals, LED headlamps and taillamps, as well as lots of chrome and two-tone alloy wheels. S K O D A in bold letters dominates the tailgate, and even the rear bumper is stylized to make the crossover look that bit sportier.
The flowing roofline slopes gently towards the rear, and a spoiler is also provided to improve the aerodynamic qualities of the crossover. Penned by SAIC Skoda in China and Skoda Design in the Czech Republic, the Kamiq GT sweetens the deal with “sports seats that offer excellent lateral support.”
It remains to be seen if the 1.5-liter engine with 110 PS will be the only powerplant available, but knowing the Volkswagen Group, it’s possible that Skoda will level up the TSI four-cylinder to 150 PS and 250 Nm to mirror the ratings of the European model. In addition to a six-speed manual, customers can also look forward to a seven-speed DCT and a fully-digital instrument cluster.
“The Czech brand’s second SUV coupé will be offered exclusively for the Chinese market,” so don’t get your hopes up for a European counterpart anytime soon.
The Volkswagen Group and FAW Group announced the Tianjin plant in 2018, with a daily production capacity of 1,200 units and up to 300,000 vehicles yearly. Volkswagen and Audi will join Skoda in an all-out SUV offensive, and plug-in hybrids are also planned for the state-of-the-art facility.
