Over in Germany, the tuning scene is as strong as it gets. Brabus is one of the most respected tuners from the Federal Republic, and can you believe they’re asking €39,900 for a limited edition of the smart fortwo cabrio?
That’s more than the entry-level version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class money (€34,914), almost matching the C-Class Coupe (€40,406). But then again, the 125R is as special as a city car can get. Only 125 examples will ever be made, each bearing a plaque to remind the owner how are the car is.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty, the 0.9-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine develops 125 PS (123 horsepower). Torque stands at 200 Nm (148 pound-feet), and as you can tell from the photo gallery, the 125R is equipped with the twin-clutch transmission called Twinamic, coming courtesy of Getrag.

The Bottrop-based company quotes 9.2 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph), with top speed coming in at 175 km/h (109 mph). For a 0.9-liter, that’s extremely impressive for the displacement. But then again, the fortwo cabrio is light on its feet.

Sitting 30 millimeters lower to the ground than the bone-stock model, the 125R comes with 16- and 17-inch wheels. Newities also include an exhaust system with three pipes, body-hugging seats wrapped in black leather, red seams, aluminum pedals, and an anodized finish for the parking brake and paddle shifters.

Yokohama high-performance tires wrap the wheels, and as far as paint is concerned, customers can choose between glossy black and matte titanium for the exterior of the car. The carbon-design door mirrors are complemented by the tinted third brake light, rounding off the list of modifications.

In related news, smart prepares to go all electric. The Daimler AG-owned company will ditch internal combustion by 2020. Over in Canada, the switch to electric halved sales of the fortwo. Back in February 2018, for example, smart’s Canadian division sold 13 examples of the breed. Here's hope smart won't disappear altogether as a consequence of the automaker's new strategy.
