The Ford Mustang is one of America's most iconic cars, but many enthusiasts would rather have the second-generation model deleted from its past. Luckily, there are a few cool Mustang II examples out there that prove this would be a mistake.
Introduced following a string of cool, high-power first-gen Mustang models, the second-gen pony was severely underpowered due to government restrictions at the time. It wasn't exactly pretty either, so many view it as a fancied-up Pinto. But despite all the hate, the Mustang II was actually popular with consumers, selling more than 1.1 million units in five years.
You might not know it, but the Mustang II spawned a few impressive race cars, particularly Pro Stock dragsters. Iconic racer Harold "The Drag Hag" Dutton built one back in the day and race it successfully. The car is still around in all-original form and it still boasts a massive Police Interceptor V8.
Yes, you heard that right. This Mustang II got rid of its lazy Windsor V8 decades ago. The mill was replaced by a 1970s Police Interceptor engine. An not just any Interceptor mill, but the largest ever built by Ford. Specifically, it displaces a massive 7.5 liters and thanks to Dutton's modifications, it cranks out well in excess of the stock 375 horsepower.
There's no word as to how much oomph it cranks right now, but it sounds like a beast and it ran 10- and nine-second quarter-mile passes at a recent testing session. The owner says it still needs some tuning to get it where it should be. And by that he means eight-second runs.
It's probably the quickest race-spec Mustang II out there except for Funny Car dragsters. The fact that it has been maintained so well over the years is absolutely fantastic.
Now hit play and watch it complete the quarter-mile in 9.76 seconds while hitting 135.59 mph.
