Aero Tiny, Australia’s Most Unique Tiny House, Is Made From a Plane Section

A tiny home offers the possibility of buying your own home with the promise of minimal costs in the long run. More importantly, it includes the promise of freedom because, anytime you feel like it, you can just get into your car, hook the tiny home to it and drive off into the sunset – or another city, wherever you need to be.

Of course, there are downsides to owning a tiny home as opposed to real estate, and the debate on whether they’re a sound investment is still raging. But if you’re looking into this possibility, there is a company in Australia, the Tiny House Guys, that adds extra quirkiness to an already quirky project.

Take for instance the latest, the Aero Tiny. It’s a tiny home made from a section of a plane and it’s the cutest and yet most elegant little thing ever.

“Welcome to the just completed Aero Tiny, possibly Australia’s most unique tiny house,” the company says in the description of the newly-completed home. “Made from part of a Dash 8 twin prop training aircraft section it has a fully functional aircraft door and emergency exit window.”

The Dash 8 twin engine turbo prop plane was introduced in 1984 and, as of 1986, has come to be referenced as the “Q Series” aka “quiet series” because it comes with active noise and vibration suppression. That’s just trivia, though, because with Aero Tiny, you don’t get – or need – any of these.

However, what you do get with the small rolling house is the airstair, the emergency exit sign, the fold-down seat once used by flight attendants and the small rounded windows on one side.

More importantly, what you get is self-sufficient housing. Aero Tiny is fitted with a large shower, a bathroom, and the open-space living that serves for living room, bedroom and dining area / kitchen. There is a fold-out couch and a fold-down dining table, a sink, chairs and plenty of storage space.

Aero Tiny has a water tank and water pump, and solar powers on the roof. It also has a roll-out side deck with detachable side hand rails, which comes to extend living space by a bit more.

Rick Keel, who founded the company after 35 years as a carpenter, tells the Daily Mail in a recent interview that they’re focused not so much on profit (it’s ok to scoff at that) but on offering sustainable housing alternatives to those who can’t afford rent or buying their own piece of real estate. Obviously, Keel doesn’t agree with critics saying that tiny houses aren’t exactly a trend but more of a fad that will soon go away.

“We speak to a lot of people who can't afford the expense of buying a home or are wanting to avoid renting – our tiny houses are definitely a good alternative,” he says. “All of our tiny houses are custom made and eco-friendly, and the Aero Tiny house was a way to get creative with the design.”



Keel believes people will continue to show interest in this type of house-trailer hybrid because convenience trumps leisure. Not that tiny homes don’t offer the possibility for the latter: those who are more financially well-off can look into purchasing one as a means to travel in more comfort and without having to put up at hotels.

Tiny Aero is already complete, but Keel and his company can make practically any tiny house a customer wants. Each project takes between four and six weeks to complete, with prices ranging from $55,000 to $100,000. They’re not exactly cheap, but there’s a market for them (still).
