Plagued by numerous and lengthy manufacturing halts at its factories, Tesla recently announced lower-than-expected production and delivery numbers for the third quarter of 2023.
These figures, which are way below expectations, might give renewed power to detractors who claimed Tesla's recent price cuts were a mistake. As of now, at home in America, the most affordable Tesla is the RWD Model 3, starting at $40,240, followed by the RWD version of the Model Y, which just resurfaced on the company's sales portal with an MSRP of $43,990.

Naturally, the flagship Model S and Model X are much costlier – they start at $74,990 and $79,990, respectively. Obviously, there's room for growth as the Plaids have dropped well below the $100k mark and now start at $89,990 (both Model S and X), for example. But not everyone has forgotten about Elon Musk and Co.'s pledge to create something even more affordable than the compact Model 3 and mid-size Model Y.

And that remembrance is valid both in the real world and across the imaginative realm of digital car content creators. For example, PoloTo is a distinctively named automotive news video channel on YouTube - and they also share visions of new models created with assistance from AI. So, in the feature embedded below, they speculate about the potential arrival of an unofficial Tesla Model 2 compact hatchback to expand the EV family.

They also have some ideas about the design – various hypothetical renderings that have in common the assistance provided by AI tools and the fact that each version differs slightly from the one before. However, the main gist is simple – Tesla could build an inexpensive compact hatchback that would reach the proposed target of a $25k starting price by way of economies of scale, reusing the electric motor from RWD Model 3 and Y plus fitting a smaller 50-kWh battery.

Lighter and more aerodynamic than the Model 3 and Y, the hypothetical Tesla Model 2 would still have a full range of around 250 miles on a single charge – over 402 km, which is not too far from the Model Y rating of 260 miles (418 km). With that range and such an asking price, the Tesla Model 2 would pose a significant threat to other compact EVs like the Volkswagen ID.3 or the Kia Niro EV, among others.

So, what do you think – should Tesla finally start development of a dirt-cheap EV hatchback to conquer the low end of the market? And is it feasible to expect such a car sometime during the current decade when considering the usual tardiness of Tesla when launching announced models like the second-generation Roadster and Cybertruck? Remember, both were presented during the past decade, and we are yet to see either of them reach their intended customers even now!
