The Swedish automaker, which China's Geely owns, is one of the most ardent supporters of the switch to the novel lifestyle. As such, they are pulling all the strings to make it happen – even joining completely new vehicle segments in the process.
The Swedish-Chinese carmaker recently worked some secret engineering magic to make the 2024 C40 and XC40 Recharge compact crossover SUVs a little better with enhanced efficiency and a higher zero-emissions range. However, the company might soon make them obsolete because the revolutionary EX30 is coming with targeted numbers that would put to shame even the best-selling Tesla Model Y.
Plus, the brand also has an EX90 flagship EV sport utility vehicle coming to market to make sure all ends of the business are well covered. And it always works to have a B-plan, too. Well, as far as the flagship electric vehicle sector is concerned, the alternate will arrive on November 12 in the form of the China-focused Volvo EM90 – the company's first-ever electric minivan.
The first rumors of a Volvo MPV emerged back in January, and while some folks discarded the reports as vaporware, the company recently published an introductory teaser showcasing the Scandinavian housing lifestyle transfixed in the back of the all-new, first-ever EM90 minivan. A multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) is something that you do not want in the West anymore – as crossovers have taken over.
But in places like China, they are still wildly popular, and Volvo has decided to join the party with a bit of help from the Zeekr 009 minivan – borrowing its underpinnings and dual-motor setup for a combined EV potential of up to 536 horsepower. As such, they would be part of the Geely family and use the Sustainable Experience Architecture 1 (SEA1) alongside the Zeekr 001, the more renowned Lotus Eletre SUV, and the upcoming Polestar 5.
Interestingly, that idea also attracted some attention from across the imaginative realm of digital car content creators. And Sugar Chow, the virtual artist better known as sugardesign_1 on social media, has even paused his Chinese and station wagon renderings for this MPV that combines characteristics from both the East and West. Not seamlessly, though, as the hypothetical Volvo EM90 reinterpretation of the Zeekr 009 isn't unanimously praised by the author's fans.
Instead, some were saddened by the prospect of a potentially simple badge engineering job, and some even got angry that Geely was 'ruining' Volvo. However, not everyone panned the design, as others believed this unofficial project cleaned up the Zeekr 009 into the upcoming Volvo EM90 quite nicely. Alas, there is also a third way of seeing things: what if Volvo does not care about the Zeekr 009 and instead already chose the EX90 to serve as a template for the EM90, as the name suggests a potential connection?
