Mainstream compact sedans have lost ground to high-riders these past few years, but several companies still won't ditch them anytime soon. Skoda is one of them, as the Octavia is getting a mid-cycle refresh.
Based on the fourth generation, which is now four years old, the 2024 Skoda Octavia is in the testing and fine-tuning phase. Our spy photographers nabbed it a couple of months ago. The prototype had its front and rear ends under wraps and was on towing duty.

It won't bring anything significant for the facelift, as we can expect new lighting units and different bumpers at the front and rear, which will likely bring it in line with the brand's more modern vehicles. The profile carries over with no changes, bar the wheels, which could be new. Chances are Skoda will give it new colors and perhaps minor tech revisions on the inside, with fresh software and maybe graphics on the two main screens.

Based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf, SEAT Leon, and Audi A3, the Skoda Octavia is not technically a sedan but a liftback, as it has a tailgate opening up into a generous trunk area. Those wanting even more cargo space can opt for the station wagon. For the mid-cycle update, it is expected to retain the powertrain family, albeit with small changes, so look for the same gasoline, diesel, mild-hybrid, and compressed natural gas units, more or less. Some more attention might be paid to the electrified variants, and the range-topping RS (vRS in the UK) will live on, though we're not so sure about the jacked-up Scout.

Now, while the VW Group-owned Czech marque keeps testing the facelifted Octavia in the open, the internet has started having its way with it. These renderings came from Kolesa, and they try to depict what it looks like beneath the fake skin. Thus, it sports the usual updates at both ends that will allow it to fly under the radar to anyone who's not familiar with the brand's design language. And for what it's worth, they're not exactly on the realistic side, as the headlamps will probably sport different graphics, and the front bumper will look less aggressive. Save for a few tweaks, the back end could be spot on.

We will have to wait for the facelifted Skoda Octavia to debut in order to see if these digital illustrations were on to something, and that might happen in the coming months. The official unveiling date has yet to be confirmed. However, we think it will premiere before the end of the year, with Europe's dealers getting the first units perhaps in early 2024. An all-electric variant of the Octavia is expected further down the line.
