2024 Hot Wheels Case H Reveals Eighth Super Treasure Hunt of the Year

If I would buy all of Mattel's castings on my bucket list right now, I'd have to spend at least $5,000 in one go. That is the same cost I would have to pay for a new body kit and a new turbo for my FC RX-7. So I'd rather feel the real thrills than just look at a static tiny car collection, at least for now. The problem is that my "I want this on display at my home" list keeps getting longer every week.

I tried to avoid Mainline castings recently, but it's not going well. And with Case H just around the corner, I feel compelled to go out and buy a few cars. Three months into 2024, we're already getting a taste of the eighth Mainline case for this year. Sure, we'll have to wait a few months before it arrives in stores unless you have some solid connections in Malaysia or Southeast Asia, for that matter. Let's see if it's any better than the previous cases.

Regular Treasure Hunt

Right off the bat, the new Treasure Hunt is infinitely better than at least three of its predecessors. The Ain't Fare bus is arguably inferior to the Purple Passion. But people are bound to rank the remaining castings differently.

After all, both Chevys and the Mustang Mach-E 1400 are pretty decent. Larry Wood's Purple Passion has been around since 1990. And this isn't its first rodeo, as it was part of the first-ever Treasure Hunt collection in 1995. Since then, there have been plenty of variations, some on Real Riders wheels and some rarer than others.

Although Mattel didn't release a new design for 2023, I didn't expect the manufacturer to abandon such an iconic project just yet. After all, there are over 120 variations to collect. I wonder if it will ever hit 200.

Super Treasure Hunt

Let's get down to the main topic, as I'm sure Super Treasure Hunt enthusiasts will want to learn more about this one. I still remember the day that "Ain't No Saint" won the Hot Wheels Legends competition, securing a place in Mattel's tiny world of 1/64th-scale cars.

Lee Johnston collaborated with Manson Cheung on designing the Volvo P1800 Gasser casting, and I knew from the get-go that it would be difficult for the diecast manufacturer to develop a better variation. It wasn't exciting in Maroon, and the recent non-STH version is just as bad in Matte Azure. Popping up in Spectraflame Light Blue improves the situation; however, I do not like the pink-tinted windows.

I might feel different about it if I see it up close, but the chances of that happening are slim. Someone already listed a Short Card version for $200 on eBay, and I can only assume that he's either working in the factory or has some acquaintances inside the company somehow.

Case H Highlights

Let's see some of Case H's highlights. Seeing the Audi 90 Quattro gives me hope that I won't have difficulty finding one, as it was also part of the previous Case. The '76 Greenwood Corvette is back for the second time in 2024, and the new color combo looks infinitely better than the Metaflake Plum version. If you account for the Target Exclusive Red Edition collectible, the Fiat 500e is now at its third iteration this year.

While most Hot Wheels Porsche enthusiasts eagerly await the next 911 casting, I'm sure they'll be as happy about the new 904 Carrera GTS. Fraser Campbell designed this casting, and you shouldn't mistake it for the Premium-only '66 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 that Mark Jones worked on for Team Transport. At first, I thought the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was the same Orange model from 2023, but something felt off.

It turns out it's a new variation, and while I prefer it to the old one, I'm still waiting for the iconic white/green color combo. The Mazda RX-3 is the newest appearance in the 'Tooned series and a great one. It sports the same orange design as the non-'Tooned version we saw in Team Transport last year. And I'll try to get them both together for a photoshoot soon.

The '64 Chevy Chevelle SS is a rather unexpected appearance, as I haven't seen any sneak peeks of this. Mattel used it in the Ultra Hots series last year, and there are only 13 other variations to look for. It reached Super Treasure Hunt status in 2020, but the new version will have to do if you don't plan on spending as much as $100 for a single item.

The '15 Mazda MX-5 Miata showed up with a Seafoam Green earlier this year, and it looks just as good in orange. This is its 12th variation since its 2016 debut, and I wonder if Mattel will develop a replica of the upcoming facelift version next. I'm trying my best to accept the yellow-on-yellow look of the most recent Corvette C6 iteration, but it's not an ideal color combo if you ask me. At least they got the GMC Hummer right, and I don't mind the black wheels on this one.

I would still spend my money on the "Ramchargers" Dodge Dart instead of the previous two castings. Red seems to be the go-to color for Case H, and it's a perfect match for the '63 Studebaker Champ. Mattel used this casting for the Super Treasure Hunt line-up in 2022, and we only saw a Multipack Exclusive variation in 2023.

The Jeep FC falls under the same color category, and I'm excited to know that we'll also have a ZAMAC variation this year. The same goes for the McLaren Solus GT, which means this new orange variation is the fourth one since its 2023 debut. Overall, Case H looks pretty decent, with some exceptions. Surely, Mattel has more surprises in store for future mixes, and I'll be sure to report back once I have all the info.
