The Ford Performance crate engine catalog has recently welcomed a dual-overhead-cam ruffian that costs $29,500 from the outset. Customers have to purchase a Ford Performance control pack for said engine as well, adding $2,650 to the tally.
Considering that Japanese automaker Toyota wants $31,725 plus $1,350 destination charge for a brand-new RAV4 Hybrid, that's a whole lot of money for an engine. However, said powerplant is a bit on the special side of double-overhead-cam V8 motors. Not only does it replace the Ford Performance M-6007-M52SC S550 Shelby GT500-spec crate engine, but it's pretty similar to the series-production mill powering the F-150 Raptor R.

Instead of the supertruck's 720 horsepower and 640 pound-feet (868 Nm) on premium dinosaur juice, the M-6007-M52SCA is good for 760 ponies and 625 pound-feet (847 Nm) at the crankshaft. 20 more horses in exchange for 15 pound-feet of torque is a good trade-off. Similar to the dune-bashing truck, which is punchier than the Ram 1500 TRX for model year 2024, the secret ingredient comes in the guise of an Eaton-supplied R2650 supercharger.

The Roots-type blower is joined by a 92-millimeter throttle body, exhaust manifolds, Grafal anti-friction coating for the forged aluminum pistons, a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, the starter, alternator, and the A/C compressor. Shipping in two boxes, the big-boy crate engine is listed with a dry weight (without the front end accessory drive) of 536 pounds (243 kilograms).

Ford Performance does not say where said crate engine is manufactured, although the Dearborn-based automaker did confirm that production will continue at the Dearborn Engine plant following a massive investment. According to documents published by the UAW, we're dealing with $20 million toward the supercharged lump, the good ol' Duratec, and a yet-to-be-detailed BEV battery.

It's not known whether the Predator will soldier on until the very end of the labor agreement's expiration date, which is April 2028. Whatever may happen, you shouldn't brace yourselves for the V8 apocalypse. Considering that General Motors confirmed a new generation of the Detroit-based automaker's long-running small block, the Coyote and Predator still have plenty of life left in them.

In the Coyote's case, the Ford Motor Company updated it for the 2024 model year Mustang in many respects, of which the dual throttle body and intake configuration stand out. As for the Predator, the most Ford has confirmed thus far about its latest evolution is dual air inlets for the Mustang GTD.

The most powerful series-production Mustang isn't even produced by FoMoCo, but rather Multimatic in Canada. Approximately 1,000 units are to be produced at a rate of 300 to 700 examples per year. Mustang GTD's force-fed V8 develops in excess of 800 horsepower, and the track-focused monster starts at – do sit down for this one – $325,000.

There's no telling whether the 800-plus-horsepower Mustang GTD engine will ever be offered in the form of a crate engine. Anyhow, the Blue Oval's crate engines – including this fellow – are intended for off-highway or competition use only.
