Mercedes is currently busy launching the S-Class of SUVs, which is the new GLS-Class. However, we're more curious to see the actual S-Class, which is still about a year away from being revealed.
Based on that, we're confident calling this the 2021 S-Class, since the GLS is already a 2020 model year. Usually, you can judge when a Mercedes model is going to be revealed by how much camouflage is covering it, and this latest test prototype is quite obscured.

Still, Mercedes is showing a bit of ankle with the fancy new headlights which are seen blinking away as the prototype changes lanes. We wonder if the W223 is as good at doing that automatically as something like the Tesla Model S.

We've grown quite accustomed to this prototype, to the point where we don't really notice how big it is. However, the 2021 S-Class will have a much longer wheelbase and wider tracks compared to its predecessor. The Maybach model will be even bigger still. Another detail potentially being borrowed "inspired" from Tesla are flush-fitting door handles. Hopefully, those don't also cost a couple of grand to fix when they go wrong.

While the S-Class is still one of the most iconic Mercedes models, its significance is diminishing every year. Still, the company is ready to debut stuff it with new technologies that aren't available on other models. For example, it will have the highest level of autonomy and new interior design with a super-sized screen floating over the lower dash. Hopefully, that doesn't mean people try to sleep while the car is driving like the do in Teslas.

The engine technology remains a mystery. However, we do expect increased reliance on plug-in hybrid systems in Europe, helping Mercedes meet those strict emissions targets. Trademarks also suggest a flagship PHEV will come in the form of the S73 AMG, which is expected to have over 700 horsepower.
