Unlike other tiny house manufacturers, Baluchon doesn't like to experiment with different styles and aesthetics for its compact homes. That's because the French builder seems to have found a successful recipe that makes its designs stand out from the plethora of models available on the market.
Most of its pint-sized homes harmoniously blend modern and rustic design elements, boast an easily recognizable exterior look that mixes red cedar siding contrasted by vibrant accents and a colored standing seam aluminum roof, and are built for downsizers who want to truly commune with nature. This is also the case with the builder's latest creation, a 19.6-foot (6-meter) long towable dwelling called the Mirasol ('Sunflower’ in English).

Like all the units crafted by Baluchon, Mirasol is a custom build, and though it follows the same tried and true design recipe, it is specifically tailored to meet the owner's unique needs and desires. As such, it comes with its own distinctive features, a unique layout, and carefully selected amenities to make the most of every square inch and, at the same time, allow dwellers to embrace the fundamental values of simplicity and efficient living.

Built on a double-axle trailer, this home on wheels boasts a charming exterior that combines timber cladding with green aluminum accents and a lovely Scandinavian-style interior that, despite its compactness, integrates more than the basic necessities. Actually, this is one of the things that Baluchon is an expert at - transforming any meager space into a magical haven that squeezes in a lot of functionality while still preserving an air of understated elegance. And Mirasol is the perfect example that limited square footage doesn't necessarily have to mean minimal design.

We know that each time the talented team reveals a new design, we are bound for some surprises. In the case of Mirasol, a standout feature is the drop-down chestnut bar attached to the outside of the house. It was a special request from the client, as they plan to install a deck along the entire length of the house and thus create a nice space to hang out with friends. Placed at the height of a panoramic pass-through window, the folding table creates the perfect setup for an indoor-outdoor bar.

As for the large sliding window, besides letting plenty of sunlight get inside and delighting residents with beautiful views, it doubles as an aesthetic feature that adds architectural interest to the overall design.

Another interesting addition is a removable outdoor pantry that is designed to provide food storage in winter, thus eliminating the need to use the electric refrigerator included inside.

The interior of the house, finished in ash and spruce, seems surprisingly spacious and airy thanks to the extensive glazing throughout, and the use of natural wood gives the home a warm, inviting atmosphere. It is smartly laid out to cater to the needs of the owner, with a cozy living room, a beautiful kitchen, a loft bedroom, and a functional bathroom.

Since tiny homes don't usually have hallways or vestibules, the designers found a clever way to integrate that functionality in the open living space by adding a small shoe rack and two hooks on the wall next to the entrance.

Mirasol's living room is dominated by a large L-shaped sofa surrounded by glazing on three sides, which makes it incredibly luminous. The sofa is convertible, meaning it can be turned into a secondary bed to bring the home's accommodation capacity to four people. An electric inertia heater and a large wall shelf for books and decorations are also part of the living room design.

Next up is the galley kitchen with plenty of cabinetry and shelves for storage and various appliances that make cooking delicious meals a breeze. On one side, the oak countertop extends almost three meters (9.8 feet) in length, with almost half of it being used as a dining table for two. The space is close to the lounge and the entrance door and could also double as a breakfast or snack bar when the owner has guests over. The open-plan configuration, coupled with the large pass-through window and the outside bar, will help transform this part of the house into an entertainment area for parties and family get-togethers.

Across from the main kitchen unit is another cabinet that adds extra counter space for meal prep, plus a large wardrobe that enhances the house's storage capacity.

The only private space on the main floor is the bathroom, which is quite compact and includes a sleek full-size shower with black walls and glass doors and a dry toilet with a stainless steel bucket.

The bedroom inside Mirasol is snug and cozy, a typical tiny home lofted sleeping space with low ceilings. However, there is generous headroom to feel comfortable, and two large windows ensure it is luminous and well-ventilated. It houses a double bed and can be accessed via a removable ladder.

Baluchon is arguably the best-known tiny house builder in France, but its designs are an inspiration for tiny living enthusiasts across the globe. With its beautiful aesthetics, cleverly laid out interior, and fine details, the Mirasol is yet another lesson in efficient tiny house design.
