The development of any German car is done at a snail's pace, especially if it's a brand new flagship from the biggest name in the premium class. We're talking about the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, spied today showing a tad more of its front end design.
We remember when the W223 was just a mule of the old S-Class with bits of metal added on. But now Mercedes is beginning to remove bits of camouflage from the actual thing, suggesting we're getting close and closer to its debut.

This test car sports production headlights that look quite different from what the current model has. They're much narrower and angled to make the front look slightly angry. It's nothing major, since the CLA-Class and CLS-Class both have this look. But nothing else Mercedes makes boasts those door handles for an ultra-streamlined look.

We think this prototype is of the fake AMG variety. Like almost all manufacturers, Mercedes allows its customers to combine regular, fuel-efficient engines with a more aggressive styling package. The S-Class should remain one of the few models where the AMG Line package doesn't give you a mesh-like grille pattern. It's still got to look dignified and expensive, but we can see some enlarged side air intakes.

The kit we're looking at might not be complete, as it's lacking a diffuser and bigger wheels. Right now, the AMG Line kit costs €7,400, as much as a Dacia car, which kind of explains how Mercedes makes so much money. But the 2021 models will have plenty of other ways to take your money. You'll probably be able to spend over €20,000 on electronics like the Level 3 autonomous system, remote parking and access, or clever suspension to iron out the lumps.

As for the engines, everything that powers this 5.3-meter limo should have a lot of inline-6 units with 48V EQ Boost architecture to allow for things like regenerative braking. On top of this EQ Power plug-in hybrids should offer more range, up to 100 km per charge. However, the job of being fully electric will be left to the EQS, a separate design that's more coupe-like.
