The next-generation S-Class continues its long, hard testing cycle ahead of its big debut more than a year from now. A lot is riding on the success of this W223 model, which will come packed with all the latest tech.
We also can't forget that the W222 launched every new design idea Mercedes uses right now. It was the first to have those lines going down the side or the twin screens that we almost take for granted. But the question is, what's going to change with the next generation?
For starters, it seems the W223 S-Class will be a little more understated and sleek, in contrast to most modern luxury cars which are all about oversized air intakes and bold creases. Looking at the prototype up-close, we notice that the radar system is now located slightly below the main grille, which seems a bit smaller.
Also, there doesn't seem to be room for a big emblem on this model, though this isn't surprising on an S-Class. Based on earlier prototypes, we know that the W223 will be a little bit wider and lower, with a modified wheelbase. So even though the sedan is not as bold, its proportions are quite sporty.
The door handles are completely obstructed, which suggests Mercedes will install flush-fitting ones as Jaguar and Range Rover do on their high-end models. We don't know for sure yet, but it seems interior designers are thinking of installing only one main screen bigger than before and reminiscent of a Tesla.
Of course, the flagship model is already fitted with the latest generation of inline-6 and sometimes inline-4 engines. This won't change when the 2020 model comes out, but we do expect to see a plug-in hybrid with about 100 kilometers of fully electric range next decade. The job of 100% electric mobility will go to the EQ S, which is a pretty rare sight but has also begun being developed.
