It's hard to make a 3-row SUV look good, so we're not surprised with the outcome of the 2020 Audi Q7 refresh. However, we feel like it's worth taking a second look, as there's a lot of video footage available right now to show all the details which the official photos missed.
The Q7 is kind of doing its own thing, offering more room than what we believe to be its direct rivals, the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE. However, it was beginning to show its age in the looks department, which is why a mid-life facelift changed a variety of things.
In the past, some Audi facelifts were so mild that you could switch parts from one model to the next, such as the infotainment or headlights. However, this 2020 model brings a variety of changes. The whole front end is new, revised around better headlight technology (lasers are optional) and a two-tone paint effect where they used shiny grey plastic to contrast against the main paint finish. Only the A6 quattro has this appearance.
Of course, Audi is only showing us the sexier S line body kit, and it's not perfect. Like other new models from the company, it features two gigantic 100% fake exhaust tips. We also think that both the BMW X5 and X7 look sportier.
It's on the inside where the biggest changes happened. Audi stripped out the entire dashboard and replaced it with the setup from the Q8. This means not only a pair of large displaces but also a large piano black insert where the old model had just regular plastic.
Three V6 turbocharged engines will be available at launch, followed shortly by the SQ7 with its V8. There's the 45 TDI with 231 HP, the 50 TDI with 286 HP and the 55 TFSI with 340. All three were actually introduced a few months ago when Audi had to meet new emissions regulations and feature a mild-hybrid system with brake energy recovery.
