Introduced in 2014 and twinned with the Jeep Renegade, the Fiat 500X has lost its shine. This means the mid-cycle refresh is up to the job of bringing sales back on an upward trend, with the Italian automaker expected to introduce the newcomer in the fall.
The Fiat 500X shares the Small Wide 4x4 vehicle platform with the smallest Jeep in the lineup. Speaking of which, the Renegade was facelifted for the 2019 model year, and most of the newities brought to it should trickle down to the Italian crossover as well.
As you can tell from the teaser photo, full-LED lighting technology and slim-looking grille are in the pipeline. The more pronounced bumper resembles the units on the 500 and 500L to some extent, with Fiat playing the design game as cohesive as possible throughout the 500 lineup.
Even though we don’t have any photograph of the rear end or interior, chances are nothing much will change for the 2019 model year. A different bumper, the larger touchscreen-based infotainment system, those are the things that Fiat is expected to change on the 500X.
The biggest difference, however, will be made under the hood. A three-cylinder turbocharged engine displacing one liter should become the entry-level option, packing 120 PS (118 horsepower) and 190 Nm (140 pound-feet) of torque. Higher up the spectrum, there could be a 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbo with two levels of output: 150 and 180 PS (148 and 177 horsepower) along with 270 Nm (199 pound-feet) of torque.
“So will it debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show?” Most likely not, with Fiat missing from the list of exhibitors along with Alfa Romeo and Jeep. On the other hand, Ferrari and Maserati will be present at the fall’s most important automotive event.
Over in Italy, the 500X is available in two forms: Urban Look and Cross Look. The Abarth 500X is nowhere to be seen in the lineup, but Fiat might be tempted to add some go-faster flavor to the compact-ish crossover utility vehicle.
