Care to guess what is hiding underneath that blue veil? As you can tell from the size of the rear wing and flared wheel arches, the Divo will borrow some of the styling we’ve seen on the Vision Gran Turismo, the concept car presented at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show as a preview for the Chiron.
Scheduled to premiere on August 24, 2018 at 11:20 a.m., the Divo is “built for corners” according to a hashtag used by Bugatti on social media. "This one is quite a bit more beast [compared to other models]" according to Frank Heyl, the head of exterior design at the French hypercar manufacturer.
Project leader Pierre Rommelfanger, on the other hand, said that “the coachbuilding approach gave the engineering team the opportunity to build up a new radical exterior.” Even though coachbuilding is a term we associate with hand-built cars from days long past, don't forget this is the 21st century. More to the point, carbon fiber is the name of the game for this particular application.
Expected to be lighter than the Chiron Sport, the Divo that will be presented on Friday appears to be finished in silver and turqoise if our eyes are not mistaken. The teaser photo with the covered car also reveals a shark fin that connects the roof to the rear wing.
As you know from World Endurance Championship prototypes and Formula 1 cars, the fin is there to maximize grip during cornering. How does a simple piece of carbon fiber do that? In addition to the lateral force caused by the air hitting the fin, the airflow counteracts yaw, thus keeping the vehicle on its line throughout the corner.
Expected to tip the scale at more than 1,800 kilograms, the Divo could also develop more ponies from the 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 than the Chiron Sport and Chiron. Bugatti will manufacture 40 examples of the breed at €5 million per piece, which is another way of saying that you won’t get the chance to see the Divo on the street too often.
