As you’re well aware, the Chiron and Chiron Sport will soon welcome a new member to the family. Not as fast as the two former models but better in terms of driving, the Chiron Divo will debut on August 24th at the Monterey Car Week.
The venue will also see Bugatti introduce the Sky View Roof option for the Chiron, but let’s be frank here; the high-performance model is the one everybody is looking forward to seeing at Pebble Beach. Raising the hype surrounding the Chiron Divo, the French automaker decided to undress the newcomer of its secrets through an eight-part teaser video series.
The first four clips are online on Facebook, and as you can tell, every single one of them features the personal views and expectations of the people responsible for creating the Chiron Divo. People such as chief executive officer Stefan Winkelmann, design director Achim Anscheidt, head of exterior design Frank Heyl, and project leader Pierre Rommelfanger.
"The #Divo is not a concept car,” says Rommelfanger, to which Heyl adds that Bugatti has created ”a completely new form language.” From a previous teaser photo, we’re certain the car will be more serious on downforce than its peers, translating to a lower top speed but better handling in the corners.
Less weight thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber is also confirmed, though it remains to be seen if there’s a case to be made for more suck-squeeze-bang-blow from the quad-turbocharged W16. The engine develops 1,500 PS (1,479 horsepower) and 1,600 Nm (1,180 pound-feet) of torque on full song, putting the goodies down to the road by means of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a Haldex-type all-wheel-drive system.
The rumor mill is alight with guesstimates about the Chiron Divo, with the wildest of rumors suggesting that Bugatti might even go rear-wheel drive for this application. But the truth of the matter is, that much torque going through one axle is the perfect recipe for disaster. At the end of the day, serious performance demands serious hardware; so AWD it is, then!
