2018 Range Rover Sport Facelift Debuts With 2.0-Liter Plug-In Hybrid Version

Besides the carbon-hooded SVR model, the Brits had one more surprise waiting at the reveal of the Range Rover Sport mid-life facelift: a PHEV. This powertrain could be considered a necessity for the sales department, but it also ties in with the futuristic new image of the SUV.

Even though the cosmetic changes are relatively minor, they do influence the appearance of the sport for the better. The headlights, for example, have been influenced by the design of the newer Velar.

They haven't opted for the Velar's flush-fitting door handles, unfortunately, but the new front bumper is less about chunky off-roader looks and more urban.

At the back, the Range Rover Sport has a more aggressive spoiler, while 21- and 22-inch alloys freshen up the profile. A black exterior pack can be ordered for a sinister look.

Inside, the cabin introduces new ebony vintage tan and ebony eclipse themes. A Nanoe cabin air ionization system is supposed to decompose harmful substances using charged water particles. The Range Rover Sport switches to the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, while also boasting a 12-inch digital driver’s display and a 10-inch full-color head-up display.

But let's get back to the plug-in hybrid model, because that really is a surprise. It's called the P400e, so it's part of the new Land Rover naming system. Under the hood is the smallest engine yet used in a Range Rover: 2 liters of four-cylinder turbo goodness. On its own, the unit produces the same 300 HP as in the F-Type, but it's helped by an electric motor good for another 116 HP (85 kW).

Together, they have a system output of 404 HP and 640 Nm (472 lb-ft), but P404e didn't have a nice enough ring to it. On its own, the electric drive can power the SUV for up to 31 miles or 50 km. Once drained, the battery can be topped up in 7 and a half hours using a cable or 2 hours and 45 minutes using a wall box.

Crucially, this PHEV system brings the economy of the massive SUV to a Prius-like 2.8 liters / 100 km (84 mpg US or 101 mpg the UK), corresponding to 64 grams per kilometer. Performance is also decent, with 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprints taking 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph) or 137 km/h (85 mph) in EV mode.
