The 2012 Mazda3 was launched last year after its debut at the New York Auto Show. The Japanese dressed up the old ford-base body and revealed their ambitions for more efficient cars with the first use of a Skyactiv-G petrol engine in the US market, a 155 hp unit that does 39 mpg in the sedan.
Now that the Japanese automaker has finished the new Mazda6 sedan and CX-5 crossover, at the same time refreshing the bigger CX-9, they can focus on this all-important compact model, the Mazda3.
According to Car & Driver, the new Mazda3 will be introduced in 2013 or early 2014 and will be much lighter than the current generation. We don’t know by how much yet, nor do we know anything about the engines that will be on offer, but C&D says a high-performance Mazdaspeed3 (Mazda3 MPS) is also likely. Let's not forget that Mazda's diesel engines are rumored to be coming Stateside in 2013.
The platform will reportedly be borrowed from the CX-5, which means they’ll use high strength steel.
