Subaru recently announced that its all-new Legacy and Outback, already on sale in North American and Japan, will make their European debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September. Except for a few changes - restyled front grille and slight modifications over the exterior mirrors - the two models are basically the same with the US versions.
The 2010 Legacy comes equipped with several upgraded engines. The 2.5l SOHC, based on the older 2.0l unit, got improved head cooling resin-based intake manifold and optimized piston shape. For the turbo version of this particular configuration, the Japanese manufacturer has placed the turbocharger unit directly under the forward part of the engine to increase response.
The biggest engine configuration available on the 2010 Subaru Legacy, the 3.6l 6 cylinder Boxer powerplant, generates as much as 256 horsepower and is connected to a 5-speed electronic automatic unit. Compared to the 3.0l six-cylinder engine it replaces, the new 3.6l has the same external size and uses regular-grade fuel, rather than premium required by its predecessor. The Legacy 3.6R models feature advanced Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive.
The Outback 2.5i will be offered with a 2.5-liter SOHC engine as standard, with maximum output of 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. This option comes fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission.
On the other hand, the Outback 3.6R is powered by a 3.6-liter engine that puts out a maximum power of 256 hp at 6,000 rpm and 247 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. A 5-speed automatic transmission system is offered as standard with this engine.
