Launched in 1958 as the top version of the Bel Air, Chevrolet’s Impala proved to be an instant hit. It took only a year for the new nameplate to become a stand-alone series, with the GM brand, therefore, introducing the second-generation Impala in 1959.
Produced for two years, this new Impala could be ordered with either six-cylinders or V8s, as the strategy was to allow the car to appeal to as many buyers as possible.

With over 500,000 Impalas seeing the daylight in 1960, the base engine was the same six-cylinder as before, once again rated at 135 horsepower. Needless to say, it wasn’t necessarily the most powerful choice, but for people who didn’t need more than a head-turning grocery-getter, the 235 (3.8-liter) served its purpose very well, especially as it offered an economical drive.

Next in line was the base V8, which came in the form of the already-famous 283 (4.7-liter) with a 2-barrel carburetor. This time, the power output reached 170 horsepower, so it’s no surprise it ended up becoming the most popular choice on this model year (so it’s now one of the most common powerplants on project cars).

A four-barrel version of the 283 was also offered with 230 horsepower, though the star of the show was the 348 (5.7-liter) available in no less than five different configurations. The top-of-the-range is obviously the most desirable today, as it produced 335 horsepower.

The 1960 Impala that someone is now trying to sell on eBay also comes with a 283 under the hood, and the best thing about it comes down to the current condition.

The pictures obviously indicate this Impala is a project car, but at the same time, it’s also a work-in-progress. eBay seller holdem_21 says they have already started the restoration process, so some work has been completed, including some metal fixes and various cosmetic upgrades.

The interior too looks in very good shape, so whoever ends up buying the car would just have to continue the restoration task and bring the Impala back to its original glory days.

The engine is currently starting and running properly, but at this point, it’s not clear if additional fixes are still required. If anything, interested buyers are recommended to go check it out in person in South Dakota, as this is the only way to better determine its condition and figure out what needs to be repaired and what doesn’t.

The bidding is currently underway, but the top $12,000 offer is yet to unlock the reserve. Unfortunately, the auction is scheduled to come to an end in just a few hours, so there’s a very good chance that this Impala fails to find a new home this time.
