One of the most popular B-segment crossover SUVs in Europe that you may have forgotten all about, Renault's Captur just received the second-generation's mid-cycle refresh with open 'arms.'
More than a decade ago, compact and subcompact crossover SUVs were still in their infancy in Europe, and there was enough space to create a best-selling nameplate. Showing that's as easy done as said, the French automaker Renault introduced the Captur subcompact CUV at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and quickly saw it rise through the ranks to capture the lead in the segment in Europe.

Now the little Captur is midway through the second generation, and the competition is stronger than ever – so much so that Renault is finding alternate sources of revenue by allowing Alliance partner Mitsubishi to rebrand and subtly redesign the Captur into the second-generation Mitsubishi ASX. Well, luckily, from now on, nobody will say they're almost one and the same vehicle because Renault just announced the Captur refresh, and this facelift runs deeper than anyone expected.

Adopting the latest design language of the company and also striving to connect with the latest trends that see crossovers and SUVs return to their rugged origins (at least in terms of styling, if not capabilities), the 2024 Renault Captur seeks to recapture the success of recent times – the nameplate has already sold more than two million CUVs across 90 countries around the world since its introduction more than ten years ago.

The new design language penned by Gilles Vidal, Renault's Head of Design, is obviously more mature and directed toward premium expectations. Still, the company doesn't forget to add new features, too. There's a new Esprit Alpine finish; the cabin gains new upholstery options and fresh dashboard screens. Depending on the version, an available OpenR Link multimedia system with Google built-in "provides the very best in on-board technology with Android Automotive 12, a world first in the B segment."

A completely new electronic architecture is designed to achieve better safety and performance – Renault bundles a predictive hybrid driving function and Active Driver Assist, thus reaching Level 2 for autonomous driving. On the outside, the rear is subtly tweaked with updated graphics for the C-shaped LED taillights, while the new diamond logo is featured both at the front and rear. Chrome is gone but the new face includes striking LED daytime running lights, the new logo, plus completely redesigned headlights, radiator grille, and bumper.

Inside, the facelift is a lot milder than on the outside, but Renault did upgrade the screens to 10.4 inches for the central infotainment display and up to 10.25 inches for the digital instrument cluster. Leather is also gone and in come recycled and renewable materials like hemp. Moving under the hood, the refreshed Renault Captur will be offered with an expansive range of five powertrains – they start with a meager 1.0-liter turbo good for 90 horsepower and top up with a 1.3-liter churning out 160 hp. However, Renault thinks the best version is the 145-hp E-Tech full hybrid option, "already selected by over 41% of customers in France."

"More than 10 years ago, Renaut broke with the codes of the B segment by infusing Captur with the DNA of the 'voiture à vivre' (car for living). This vision has been embodied by a maximum of comfort (…), All this while remaining compact: 4.23m. Building on its success, with over 2 million vehicles sold, Captur continues to stand out from the crowd. It is even more in tune with the times, with a new, more assertive design, an E-Tech full hybrid engine, and OpenR Link with integrated Google. These are all useful technologies," said Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of the Renault brand.

The refreshed 2024 Renault Captur is built at the Valladolid plant in Spain and will become available in Europe starting this month. The manufacturing site has been home to Renault cars since 1953 and over 8 million vehicles have been produced to date - of them 2.2 million are Capturs.
