Subaru Tecnica International dates back to 1988, which means that the performance division of the Japanese automaker is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. To mark this moment, Subaru decided to come out with the most powerful WRX STI since the Impreza STI CS400, which will bear the TC 380 badge on the trunk lid.
The only photograph of the vehicle shows the paintwork we associate with the WRX STI and the World Rally Championship-winning car, bearing the name WR Blue Pearl. The TC 380 is expected to stand for Turbo, Charged, and 380 PS, translating to 375 horsepower.

Subaru will manufacture 50 examples of the breed, and all of them are reserved for the Japanese market. Pricing starts at 4,965,840 yen, converting to $43,900 at the current exhange rate. That’s right; the TC 380 is yet another Subaru the U.S. won’t receive despite the fact there’s a huge market for the performance-oriented model in this part of the world!

Based on reports from the Japanese motoring media, the beating heart of the WRX STI TC 380 is a turbocharged boxer with 2.0 liters of displacement, benefitting from an HKS GT III RS Sport turbocharger, RQA air filter, high-flow catalytic converter, and Super Turbo resonator.

Carbon-fiber elements such as the rear lip spoiler are also included, along with Recaro seats understood to be exclusive to the TC 380. Rally driver Toshihiro Arai is the man who oversaw the creation of this special edition, and Arai Motorsport rounds off the list of improvements with more structural rigidity, coming courtesy of a front-mounted chassis brace.

Even though the Impreza has been redesigned for the 2017 model year in 2016, the WRX and WRX STI haven’t transitioned to the Subaru Global Platform. The change is expected to happen in 2020 or thereabouts, and reports suggest that Subaru will hybridize the successor.

Chris Hawken, the marketing director of Subaru in the United Kingdom, let it slip the platform has been designed for hybrid and electric application, and the XV e-Boxer is the first of these eco-friendly models. Over in the United States, the Crosstrek Hybrid for the 2019 model year comes with plug-in hybrid technology from the Toyota Prius Prime.
