Watch the Most Powerful BMW Ever Made Reach 300 km/h

This year BMW is celebrating 3 decades since the first M5 was released. Of course, such an anniversary had to be marked by a special model and the one they released had it all.
The BMW ’30 Jahre M5’ is the most powerful and quickest car the Germans ever built. Into making it, the engineers were basically showing off, achieving some rather spectacular numbers for a rear-wheel drive car.

Under the bonnet sits a similar 4.4-liter V8 engine as in all the other M5s out there but it was tuned to deliver 600 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque to the rear axle. Knowing the character of the standard M5 with its 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque, some would say that’s just too much and that you couldn’t control that thing. They’d be wrong.

Somehow, the engineers managed to do that and create a launch control module that allows you to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds. That’s blazing fast and, as we told you already, marks the fastest car BMW ever made. Sure, others can do that sprint just as fast, like the Audi RS7 but they usually have to rely on all-wheel drive to do so.

Being made in just 300 units that are probably already sold, it’s a rare occasion to see such a car at work. And yet, the guys from Option Auto managed to get one for their own testing purposes and they recorded the dash while making a run for the car’s top speed, limited at 305 km/h (189 mph).

Needless to say that they weren’t disappointed but a couple of things have to be pointed out. The car seems to be accelerating absolutely relentless up to around 240 km/h (149 mph) and only after that it starts to visibly slow down the pace. Furthermore, once it reaches 300 km/h (186 mph) the DSC light comes on probably signaling the loss of traction for some reason (possibly specs of dust on the highway) and forces the driver to slow down.

Even so, the performance it shows is still pretty unbelievable for a car that weighs nearly 2 tons. It’s basically on par with sport cars but it will also carry four people in complete luxury and comfort while doing all of these feats.
