As Tesla is rolling out FSD free trials to more customers, we get a better picture of what the self-driving software can do. A recent video shared online shows the V12.3 navigating a chaotic roundabout in crazy Boston traffic that gives even experienced drivers headaches.
Many doubted that Tesla could deliver on its Full Self-Driving promises, seeing how Elon Musk's promises of a breakthrough were broken year after year. However, with the 12th iteration of the software, the switch to using neural networks from images in to controls out appears to pay dividends. The end-to-end AI makes the FSD software a worthy companion on a road trip.

To be fair, Elon Musk has always spoken enthusiastically about the FSD Beta V12. At some point, he said this would be the first FSD version to drop the Beta moniker. But then again, Musk was bullish about every other FSD Beta version before it, so this might not have caught anyone's attention. However, with version 12.3.3, Tesla removed the beta label. A new term (Supervised FSD) was briefly used, but it was eventually called simply Full Self Driving.

Musk was so impressed with FSD V12.3 capabilities that he gave the green light for a wide rollout, including a one-month free trial for everyone. This is meant to expose as many people as possible to Tesla Full Self Driving, hoping many will continue to pay a subscription or buy it upfront. Rough estimates indicate that more than 2 million Tesla EVs could have FSD V12.3 installed, leading to an explosive increase in the FSD user base.

As more people were impressed by how good the latest FSD versions are, we also saw Tesla self-driving software performing in some nerve-racking situations that could put even experienced drivers in difficulty. Last week, we saw a Tesla on FSD executing a flawless unprotected left turn across multiple lanes. That was not the most difficult scenario for Tesla's FSD software. New videos showing how good FSD has become pop up daily, but one attracted our attention.

The video shows Tesla's software navigating a chaotic roundabout in Boston, with traffic coming from all directions and everybody breaking all the rules to get out on the other side. CyberCat (@Tesla_Cybercat) shared on X that previous attempts to use FSD Beta V11 in the same roundabout failed every single time. With FSD V12.3, it was a piece of cake. It's incredible to see how Tesla's FSD software uses its psychic powers to anticipate what all other drivers would do at every moment.

As people started asking questions, CyberCat offered more details, admitting that this was a stress-test situation that few people encounter in their everyday driving. The driver did not intervene during the video, not even to nudge the accelerator. He also confessed that FSD V12.3 earned their trust thanks to behaving more like a human, without hesitating or suddenly accelerating and decelerating as previous versions did.

This successful experiment has been repeated in various other circumstances, and FSD performed predictably every time. This shows that Tesla indeed achieved a self-driving breakthrough with V12.3, and things are only going uphill from now. With many more vehicles gathering data and Tesla not being compute-constrained anymore, we should see great things happening in 2024. Hopefully, this will also include expanding to new markets like China and Europe.
