Twinned with the Polestar 2 on the Compact Modular Architecture developed by China Euro Vehicle Technology AB, the Volvo XC40 has been hit with a recall in the United States of America. Documents filed with the federal watchdog reveal that Volvo is recalling 17,409 vehicles produced for model year 2024, vehicles affected by a software issue concerning the central electronic module.
According to Volvo Car USA, revised central electronic module software was introduced in production on December 20. When the indicator stalk is used, the diagnostic function may interpret the initial current as a short to ground, resulting in no function of the left rear turn indicator. Vehicles installed with the iffy software were produced between October 2022 and December 2023.

On the upside, drivers will be informed about said issue by a left turn indicator malfunction message. Affected owners will be notified via first-class mail by February 28, and the remedy comes in the form of new software for the central electronic module. At a later date, Volvo will release an over-the-air version of the remedy software. Volvo Car USA received the first report alleging no function of the left rear turn indicator back in November 2023.

The Swedish automaker has yet to receive any reports alleging crashes or worse. Affected VINs range between YV4EH3HK0R2231209 and YV4L12UMXR2322128, but do bear in mind that said vehicles weren’t produced in sequential order. In other words, you're better off running the 17-character VIN on the NHTSA's website to determine whether your XC40 is recalled or not.

Vehicle identification numbers beginning with Y stand for many countries, but those starting with YV are for vehicles manufactured in Sweden. Be that as it may, the XC40 for the US market actually comes from Volvo's assembly plant in Belgium.

Last week, Volvo announced that it would suspend vehicle production in Belgium for three days over supply issues caused by the ongoing attacks in the Red Sea. In response to the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as well as Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Iran-backed Houthis are targeting cargo ships in one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes.

The Ghent-based plant is listed by Volvo Cars as having more than 7,000 employees. The first all-electric Volvo, namely the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, started series production in Ghent back in 2020. It was joined by the electric-only C40 in 2021, and come 2025, the EX30 will be added to the roster.

The zero-emission XC40 carries a starting price of $52,450 in the United States of America, whereas the internal combustion-engined sibling is $40,500 from the outset. The latter is mild hybrid by default, with Volvo promising 26 miles per gallon (9.0 liters per 100 kilometers) on the combined test cycle. The electric version offers up to 293 miles (472 kilometers) on a full charge of the Li-Ion battery.
