The automotive space has become incredibly compelling for technology companies, which use different approaches to expand their presence in this industry.
Apple and Xiaomi are the only big names whose automotive expansion is based on a vehicle built from scratch. Huawei is focusing on the software side of the industry, partnering with domestic carmakers to power their new-generation models.

Google is all about Android Auto, Android Automotive, and Google Automotive Services, while Samsung invests in hardware, including chips for car manufacturers. Microsoft bets all-in on artificial intelligence and ChatGPT-powered technology.

Now, another phone maker is ready to join the automotive battle.

Meizu has confirmed that it'll launch its first car in the first quarter of 2024, with the company promising to let users customize the most important details about the car (except for the mechanical part). The so-called Meizu DreamCar MX will be born as part of a program involving users, who'll be allowed to choose the paint, the interior colors, the operating system theme, and other details.

Meizu promises to create "the first production car that is deeply customized by users." It'll run Flyme Auto, an operating system developed by Meizu that offers deep mobile phone integration. It's a greatly evolved version of a phone projection system, like Android Auto, but offers more advanced capabilities and customization settings, such as live wallpapers, dynamic themes, vehicle information, and widgets.

If you believe Meizu will have a hard time conquering the automotive space, you're wrong. The company is backed by Geely, the same name that owns Volvo, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the first model to use technology donated by the carmaker.

A Meizu DreamCar MX teaser confirms the upcoming vehicle will be a sedan, and I expect it to use an electric motor, likely with autonomy similar to the one of the Xiaomi Car. Xiaomi's SU7, also a sedan, is expected to offer approximately 800 km (approximately 500 miles) per charge.

Meizu hasn't shared other specifics, but we should learn more about the project in the first months of 2024 when the official unveiling takes place.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi is also working around the clock on finalizing its first car. The sedan is projected to see daylight in the first half of 2024, too, and I guess Meizu's announcement convinced Xiaomi to hurry up the launch preparations, as the company wants to pioneer the expansion of phone makers in the automotive space.

Apple has a completely different strategy, as the iPhone maker takes its time to make sure everything on its first vehicle works properly. The Apple Car won't be here before 2026, though people familiar with the matter already claim that a potential delay is on the table, as certain development phases advanced slower than expected.
