Volkswagen will mark 35 years of California campers by previewing the concept of a future model at the Caravan Salon trade fair in Duesseldorf. The Volkswagen California Concept will showcase the innovative ideas that made the California campers so famous. The series model will be based on the long-wheelbase version of the Volkswagen Multivan (T7).
Volkswagen launched the first California-branded camper in 1988 as a special model based on the Bus (T3). The partner that designed and built the camper was Westfalia Werke, which is why Volkswagen campers were named like that. Westfalia Werke also produced the T4-based camper vans later, with the California designation used mainly in Europe. For the US market, Volkswagen partnered with Winnebago for the equivalent Eurovan.

Starting with the T5, Volkswagen campers were produced in-house in Hanover, and the California branding was widely used. The first Volkswagen California "made-in-Hanover" rolled off the production line exactly 20 years ago, which means Volkswagen has a double California-themed celebration this year. To mark the moment, the Germans will present the California Concept at the same Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, where the model's ancestors debuted in 1988 and 2003, respectively.

The California Concept previews the production version of the next-generation California camper, scheduled to be built in Hanover in 2024. Based on the long-wheel version of the Multivan T7, the Volkswagen California camper will offer classic van qualities for day-to-day operations. It can also transform into a camper van in no time, ready for any adventure. Volkswagen touts the outstanding driving characteristics of the Multivan launched in 2021 and the 35 years of experience in building camper vans.

The upcoming California will be the first to feature a plug-in hybrid powerplant, allowing limited all-electric mobility and also long range thanks to its 1.4-liter gas engine. Volkswagen promises it will be smart, always connected, and compatible with the interactive "Cali on Tour" app. This also stands for the current generation of California, based on the Multivan 6.1. Volkswagen reminds us how all the camping functions and settings in the California 6.1 could be controlled via a touchscreen in the roof console. This concept will see an overhaul with the California Concept and, most probably, with the Multivan T7-based California.

Based on a teaser image published by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV), the display will be replaced with a removable tablet, allowing some sort of remote operation. This could be useful to change settings at the last minute without getting off the rooftop bed. Volkswagen also hints that the next-generation California will feature two sliding doors instead of just one. The teaser image shows the camper with two awnings, one on each side of the van. This could be helpful to protect you from sunlight throughout the day without having to move the van.
