Volkswagen launched the ID.7 a year ago during the Shanghai Auto Show and is now preparing to debut the US sales in the third quarter. Although it's not yet ready to disclose the US prices or range estimates, Volkswagen of America shed some light on the ID.7 trims and configurations.
Volkswagen is stretching the MEB architecture to underpin the ID.7 executive sedan despite being a little long in the tooth. The ID.7 offers compelling features, and the latest upgrades for the MEB platform ensure it's still relevant in a fast-changing EV market. The ID.7 comes with 200-kW fast charging capability, upgraded drive units, and improved efficiency, making the German carmaker optimistic that it can successfully compete with the Tesla Model S.

Volkswagen announced ID.7 pricing in Europe in August 2023, with the most affordable variant at just under 57,000 euros. This translates into about $61,600 in US money, which is not bad, considering that the Tesla Model S starts at $74,990. However, the American ID.7 will be better equipped, as Volkswagen of America announced that only the top trims will be offered. This means the ID.7 will start at a higher price, although the German carmaker is still not spilling the beans.

The Tesla Model S rival will start sales in the third quarter with the Pro S and Pro S Plus variants. Each version will be available with either RWD or 4Motion AWD configurations. The former will develop 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque (545 Nm). In contrast, the dual-motor variants will up the power to 335 horsepower.

The 82-kWh battery pack powers all American models, putting them above the European ID.7 Pro, which comes with a 77-kWh battery pack. However, Volkswagen doesn't offer more information about the estimated range of this battery pack. It's likely that the best range is only possible in the RWD variant, but don't expect it to go as far as Volkswagen announced in Europe. The ID.7 claims a 700-km (435-mile) range according to the European WLTP cycle, but I'd be surprised to see more than 350 miles based on the EPA metrics.

The ID.7 Pro S comes standard with luxury features like a 15-inch infotainment screen, augmented reality head-up display, 12-way adjustable front seats with massage, and a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic dimming. Five-door KESSY keyless access with proximity unlocking and a power tailgate with Easy Open/Close allow easy access for passengers and their belongings.

Pro Plus models ride on 20-inch wheels and feature Volkswagen's acclaimed DCC adaptive damping suspension and dynamic steering. The occupants are pampered by the premium massage Climatronic seats with automatic heating and ventilation functions. The 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system features a 14-speaker setup, including a front-center speaker and a trunk-mounted subwoofer.

Regardless of the model, Volkswagen IQ.Drive advanced driver assistance technology is offered as standard. The ID.7 provides hands-on semi-automated driving features, including driver-initiated lane changes. In addition, all ID.7 models offer Park Distance Control, Park Assist Plus with Memory Parking, and Area View.
