UPA Charging Stations for South Carolina

With the first Chevy Volts rolling off the assembly lines yesterday, the world has learned that there is no turning back. EVs, whatever their form, are coming, and there is little anybody can do to stop it.

Most companies which are even remotely connected to the automotive industry are however doing everything they can to hurry the arrival of this type of vehicles. And that includes utility solutions providers like UPA, who announced today it will begin installing a network charging stations across South Carolina.

The stations will be installed as part of the Plug In Carolina program launched by the organization which goes by the same name. The program is funded through the South Carolina Energy Office and calls for the creation of charging stations with one, two, or four charge points.

“We are excited to join a distinguished group of industry leaders propelling South Carolina’s position as the first EV-ready state in the country,” said Michael Cale, UPA CEO. “Installing EV portals represents a natural extension of our AMI/AMR capabilities, and we are thrilled at the opportunity to partner with Plug In Carolina and Eaton Corporation to prepare for the future today.”

The stations for the program are being supplied by the Eaton Corporation and will be located at municipal parking garages, public streets and participating retailers in seven South Carolina host cities.

“UPA was a great fit to manage the build-out component, due to their expertise and success in large-scale field deployments,”
added Jim Poch, Plug In Carolina executive director. “We are confident that partnering with UPA to manage the installation logistics for this network will keep us on target to develop our state’s innovative charging network.”
