1966 witnessed a significant growth in production, with Pontiac manufacturing close to 97,000 units, up from 75,000 units in 1965.
Naturally, the 2-door coupe continued to dominate sales, accounting for over 73,000 units. The convertible was next in popularity, with 12,798 units.

A Pontiac GTO convertible is the dream of many wealthy collectors, especially when it comes with an all-original setup. The GTO in these pictures landed on eBay earlier this week, promising a package you can hardly find today.

As an unmolested GTO, the convertible flexes factory parts last touched by Pontiac. The car spent its entire life in New Mexico and Nevada, so the rust isn't a concern. The paint looks original, and to be honest, it looks better than you'd imagine on a 58-year-old vehicle. The metal is solid, with good floors and a trunk, but the paint survived the test of time with flying colors. It'll need a few touches to shine like a diamond again, but a full respray might not be necessary.

The interior is also original, and while everything is in place, you'll find ripped seats and a toasted dashpad. The cabin seems to require the most attention, so if you begin a restoration project, you might spend the most time fixing the interior.

Now, let's see what's hiding under the hood.

The GTO comes with the original 389, and eBay seller mopar6930 says it runs great. It comes with a rebuilt 4-barrel carburetor.

The 389 4-barrel was the most popular choice on the 1966 GTO, as over 77,901 customers ordered this V8 for their GTO. The Tri-Power setup made its way to 19,000 GTOs, and over 61,000 buyers picked a manual transmission.

Unfortunately, the convertible top is wreaked, so you'll have to replace it completely. However, it shouldn't be such a big challenge, as finding a correct substitute is easy, especially given the number of GTO projects online at almost any moment.

The GTO seems to check the most essential boxes for a complete restoration, so it's not a surprise that so many people joined the digital fight to take it home. The 32 bids received so far pushed the selling price to $12,600, though the owner also configured a reserve. It's still in place, and given the $32K selling price, the top bid should go significantly higher to allow this GTO to leave for a new home.

You can find the car in Las Vegas, Nevada, where it's waiting for the end of the auction, and you should take it home on a trailer despite the working engine. We're not getting any specifics on the mileage, but I don't believe this GTO spent too many years on the road, considering its excellent shape and the lack of rust, even on the undercarriage.
