There are a few things I love about collecting Hot Wheels cars. One of them is that you will rarely, if ever, find two people with the same line-up of vehicles. With so many items, each collection will have something that sets it apart.
Plenty of young collectors are crazy about JDM Hot Wheels: Supras, GTRs, RX7s, and so on. Looking at older collectors, you might discover plenty of American cars, as those were abundant in the company's early days. You might meet collectors who are only into vehicles from the DC universe or others who might only purchase pickup trucks. This diversity makes the hobby thrive and keeps drawing in more people.

While I mainly focus on particular makes and models, like Porsche and Mazda items, I sometimes look into the Star Wars or Back to the Future series. But I've never been attracted to Hot Wheels Disney cars. Sure, I've seen most Disney movies since the early '90s, but I don't necessarily need to make the connection between the two brands. I'm sure that's not the case for other collectors, so I'd quickly review the 100th Anniversary set of five cars that arrived in 2023. Three of the five are unlicensed models, a complete turnoff for most adult collectors. But kids might feel differently.

The Super Gnat is the first car in the set, and this Mark Jones-designed casting has been around since 2004. Mattel wanted to make a futuristic hatchback with rally cues, and this was the result. With 16 variations, the latest one features Micky and Minnie Mouse graphics on the sides and cyan PR5 wheels. I'd say this is the least desirable model in the set, but I'm not part of the target audience.

By contrast, I can certainly appreciate the '67 Austin Mini Van. This one even has several exciting, premium variations to look for. I like the orange finish and the black Retro Slot Wheels, and I'm also a big fan of Sulley and Wazowksi. Does anyone remember that the latter even appeared on an HJC motorcycle helmet? Up next, the Bully Goat supposedly looks like a futuristic Pontiac GTO and has been part of the Hot Wheels line-up since 2005.

The ivory finish works well with the Buzz Lightyear graphics, but it all falls to pieces because of the OH5 wheels. But once again, the 5-year-old me would have liked it anyway. It has been a while since we discussed the Morris Mini, as it was part of the Collector Edition line-up in 2023. The Neon Green variation is not as good as the Spectraflame Pink one, but it's still one of the best cars in this Disney set.disns

And the Chip and Dale graphics on the side reminded me that I hadn't seen these two characters in a while. The Stockar is the final item in the Anniversary set and feels slightly better than the first two unlicensed models. Knowing how much kids have loved Frozen, I expect this to be a hit for boys and girls under 12. Which one of these five cars is your favorite?
