Mid-size sedans have lost significant ground to crossovers and SUVs, and it was these that have sealed the fate of multiple models. Fortunately, this body style is far from being dead, and one of the companies that remains committed to it is Volkswagen – for now, anyway.
Their sole proposal for Western markets is called the Arteon. It replaced the CC, and it is technically a liftback, with a station wagon variant joining the family overseas. The Arteon builds on the VW Group's MQB platform, and it is offered with a host of gasoline and diesel mills and a plug-in hybrid.

In the United States, the Volkswagen Arteon comes in three trim levels for the 2024 model year. These are called the SE R-Line, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line, and they kick off at $43,010, $47,180, and $50,175, respectively. Power comes from a 2.0L four-pot with 300 hp (304 ps/224 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, and while the entry-level is front-wheel drive, the two upper specs feature the brand's 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

The future is anything but bright for the Arteon, as poor sales have sealed its fate. In a leaked notification, Volkswagen has told its U.S. dealers that the model will be dropped this year, with the ID.7 becoming its spiritual successor. The all-electric model debuted in Europe last year and is bound to hit dealers in the New World sometime in 2024. On a more positive note, the smaller Jetta and Jetta GLI will live on in our market, catering to customers who crave a four-door sedan.

Mind you, while the Volkswagen Arteon is almost dead and buried, with VW supposedly not interested in giving it a new generation, the vehicle lives on in the virtual realm, where it recently received a third body style. You're looking at an Arteon Targa, a model inspired by the eponymous Porsche, which kind of sends mixed Toyota Celica vibes from certain angles.

It has a two-door shape, a rear canopy, and an open-top view of the sky above the front seats, which would give the driver and person riding shotgun tan lines on the go. If retained, the rear seat would be very cramped, and the cargo area would also be on the very small side.

If anything, it is not the prettiest take on the Arteon we've seen so far, as we think a two-door coupe could have been on the more appealing side of things. And if you feel the same, then fret not, as VW won't launch a Targa version of the Arteon, as the vehicle is about to drive off into the sunset, thus leaving the car world without another mid-size model and a pretty one, for that matter.
