Say what you want about Apple Maps, but you can't deny it's evolving at a super-fast pace, sometimes making even rivals like Google Maps look ridiculous.
The detailed city experience, which has recently expanded to new countries, is living proof of Apple's commitment to significant Apple Maps upgrades. It includes Apple maps, Look Around, improved navigation, and incredible details, like crosswalks, sidewalks, trees, and much more.

Apple also announced another big upgrade in 2021, though its rollout has so far happened very slowly. Apple Maps EV routing went live on the first model – the Ford Mustang Mach-E – in 2022, with Porsche Taycan getting a similar update earlier this year.

Ford has also promised to bring the EV routing to more vehicles, including the F-150 Lighting, with the rollout expected to begin by December 31.

The carmaker has since remained tight-lipped on everything related to the debut of Apple Maps EV routing on the F-150, but the rollout reportedly started earlier this week. The process takes place in stages, so not everybody can see the new features in their truck.

The EV routing is reportedly included in the PowerUp 6.3.0 update for the F-150 Lightning and requires the iPhone to pull some data from the truck, including the battery charge, to initiate the integration. Once the configuration is complete, Apple Maps can monitor the battery charge, look for charging station availability, suggest charging stops, and estimate the battery range when you arrive at a configured destination.

Eventually, Apple plans to make Apple Maps the preferred navigation system in EVs, as the application would offer integrated capabilities not otherwise available in other competing products. More often, similar features are offered in pre-loaded sat-nav solutions, but Apple Maps entices users with advanced capabilities, such as offline maps.

The debut of iOS 17 witnessed the introduction of new capabilities, including support for navigating without an Internet connection. With this update, users can navigate to a defined destination in offline mode as long as they download the necessary maps before beginning navigation.

The new operating system also includes real-time charging availability for electric vehicles, something that's been around in other navigation apps for quite some time. The feature allows drivers to look for nearby charging stations and check their availability, eventually determining if they should head towards a specific location or look for another station.

iOS 17 is available for the iPhone XS and newer, while the F-150 Lightning update is now rolling out to trucks. The feature is enabled in stages, and Ford most likely plans to bring the new functionality to everybody by the end of the year.
