When your eco-conscious commitment runs so deep that it goes beyond driving an electric car (or several of them), you start building eco-friendly homes.
Enter the so-called “Healthy House,” a 3-story mansion that has everything from Tesla batteries on the roof to be completely self-sufficient, to a 4-car garage and even an underground bunker that doubles as a walk-in safe. If you’ve been in the market for your next apocalypse-ready home and have about $26 million to spare, this one’s for you.

Designed by famed architect Ed Lohrbach and built in 2011 in the gated community of The Strand in Dana Point, Orange County, California, the “Healthy House” is called that for a very good reason. It is almost completely toxin-free and entirely self-sufficient. It was commissioned by wellness advocate August Brice and her husband Hal, with the goal of showing that you don’t have to compromise on luxury to be mindful to the environment.

The result is outstanding: the 3-story construction makes the most use of the beautiful panoramic views and combines them with understated, relaxed California, beachy touches. The vast expanses of glazing and many terraces serve to blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces, while allowing residents to fully take in the superb vistas.

The 7,852-square-feet mansion is situated above the private beach in The Strand, and comes with its own private pool and spa with summer cabin and lounge area facing the ocean. Three separate kitchens are included: one for the chef, one for catering or outdoor cooking, and one for the family, that opens into an opulent dining area.

The house has 4 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, and includes an underground 4-car garage with a lift for another vehicle. The garage is fitted with chargers for just as many Tesla vehicles because, as noted above, the goal was to make this entire home self-sufficient.

Speaking of, it was initially built with 50 roof-mounted solar panels that helped owners reduce power consumption by about $1,000 a month. As it was listed for sale in the summer of 2019, it was being fitted with Tesla batteries to be completely self-sufficient in case of a power outage and to further minimize the carbon footprint. It’s probably apocalypse-ready by now.

In addition to that, the entire home was build around environmentally-friendly materials to reduce off-gassing, while internal wiring is shielded to prevent electromagnetic field penetration. The interiors and exteriors are varnished with low volatile organic compound paint, only natural pest control has been used for landscaping, and all cleaning since 2011 has been done with organic cleaning products.

If this much attention on being environmentally-friendly is not exactly your cup of tea, know that not one of these hot selling points comes at the expense of utmost luxury. The house comes with its own gym on the lower level (that can be converted into a room with its separate entrance, if the new owner so desires), an infrared sauna system, and an “equipment” room for all your water toys, in close proximity to the beach.

Throughout are floor-to-ceiling mirrors and windows, vintage wood flooring, custom-designed Venetian plaster, and the most exclusive finishes and state-of-the-art appliances. There’s even a “zen garden” in the courtyard on the main level, terraces on each level, an exterior firepit and several fireplaces. An elevator connects all three stories, so you won’t have to tire yourself walking up and down the stairs.

On the underground level there is a bunker that doubles as a walk-in safe / panic room. It’s bulletproof and comes with custom cabinetry, separate ventilation and power system, emergency phone line and a separate security camera video feed. It will probably come in handy when zombies or intruders get into your house by crawling through your zen garden.

The “Healthy House” is listed by Rob Giem of Compass for $26 million. But think of how much money you’ll save on electricity and of the kind of healthy life you’ll be leading now that those toxins have been eliminated from the building. You can’t put a price on health, can you?
