Affectionately dubbed the “GOAT”, Pontiac’s GTO reigns supreme in the hallowed halls of automotive history. I’ve always liked this thing. It’s like the car equivalent of a perfectly tailored suit, by 1960s standards. I’m actually more of a fan of the first-generation GTO than I am of the second, let me explain why.
The original GTO entered production in late 1963 as an option package for the LeMans, but would later become a separate model. Pontiac also fiddled with the styling, opting for slightly more flared fenders for that classic “Coke bottle” aesthetic. Those cars also grew a little bit in length and width, while their rear track increased by roughly one inch – this all happened in 1966.

The following year is when my favorite GTO got built, the 1967 model year hardtop. Not only were these the best-looking GTOs ever produced, but also the safest, up to that point.

As for the second-gen model, those were pretty darn cool too (albeit a little less imposing visually), and it’s one such car we’ll be taking a look at here today – a 1970 GTO Ram Air IV hardtop coupe. This baby just got sold for $105,000, which is more than what you’d pay today for a brand-new Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock (the flagship Hellcat).

You don’t have to look too hard in order to see why this ended up costing so much. It’s a stunning vehicle, especially with that Pepper Green exterior, which was reportedly repainted during refurbishment back in 2009.

Other visual highlights include the quad headlights, an Endura front bumper, Ram Air hood with dual scoops and tachometer, chrome rear bumper, quad polished exhaust outlets, plus a set of body-color 14-inch steel wheels with Firestone Super Sport white-stripe tires. This GTO also packs factory-standard power steering and heavy-load springs and shocks.

On a less positive note, there are various cracks in the finish around the front fenders, with some additional imperfections, but it’s nothing to worry about. I’m sure it didn’t really affect the result of the auction.

Moving on to the interior, that’s where we’ll find the green vinyl front bucket seats and rear bench, plus the color-coordinated dashboard, door panels and carpets. Additional amenities include the center console, the Hurst shifter, headrests for the front seats (useful, aren’t they?), the engine-turned dashboard trim, bright door sill guards, a three-spoke steering wheel, woodgrain dashboard trim and a Delco push-button AM radio.

As for the engine, it’s a 400 ci V8 Ram-Air IV, sucking oxygen through those functioning hood scoops to the tune of 370 horsepower. Everything gets sent to the rear wheels via a Muncie M21 four-speed manual gearbox with a Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential.

Another interesting fact is how this Pontiac was appraised by the GTO Association of America back in 2013, who deemed it worthy of a so-called Gold Award. I can see why.
