The value of a scooter, or any other form of mobility, is theoretically limited only to its functionality and should never be influenced by aesthetic considerations. But if that were the case, we'd be living in a pretty bleak and boring world without personalization.
Whether we're talking about a funny car sticker or an "I heart my bike" bell, or more expensive stuff like a fully-custom boat, personalization allows us to express ourselves beyond fashion and styling choices. Riding a Vespa on the daily commute is a solid and individualized form of expression in itself, you could argue. And you wouldn't be wrong, but it can be customized even further.
To mark Disney's upcoming 100th anniversary, Disney and Vespa have joined forces for a limited edition of the iconic scooter. When we say "joined forces," it means just that. This goes without saying, but we'll say it either way: these two are the most famous and influential names in their respective fields, so the result can't but be something to match. This is the Mickey Mouse Edition by Vespa, coming to you this August on the condition that you're a resident of the US and Canada.
The collaboration is billed as a dream come true, and it's more than a figure of speech. If you've seen Disney’s most recent box office hit Luca, you probably remember how Vespa is a literal vehicle of dreams there, taking the two friends on magical adventures into a potential but remote future. Luca and Alberto never get to travel the world and soar across the skies on their Vespa, but they still live out the Vespa dream.
As of August, so could you. The Mickey Mouse Vespa brings the iconic color scheme of Disney's most famous mouse, with red, yellow, and black. And, just in case anyone still misses the connection between the two, Mickey's silhouette is present throughout, from the front to the sides of the scooter. Mickey's signature is also included on the saddle and the front shell. Whatever it lacks in subtlety, the limited-edition Vespa wins in cuteness.
The yellow wheels are meant to bring to mind Mickey's shoes, while the mirrors resemble his ears. This scooter is the closest thing to a Vespa Mickey as possible and a dream come true. "Dreams allow us to look to the future with optimism, even in complex times such as these," Michele Colaninno, Chief Executive of global strategy, product, marketing, and innovation at Piaggio Group, says in a statement.
The Mickey Mouse Vespa drops in August 2023 in USA and Canada in 50cc and 150cc variants and price tags of $US4,699 and US$6,049, respectively. "Best friends stick together," we’re told. While we had no idea Mickey and Vespa were actually this tight, to begin with, the limited-edition model is a cute way of standing out. It's also an interesting way for a Vespa rider to earn more cool points with the cool crowd.
