Dune / beach buggies may not be as popular as they were a while back, but that doesn’t mean you can’t relive the ‘60s nostalgia in great style – if you can afford it.
If slowly rolling down the beach in your Day Limo tender from Iguana Marine is not for you, you can always opt for a stylish dune buggy meant to bring back the feel of the 1960s.
Luxury brand Berluti has launched a limited-edition beach buggy inspired by the original 1964 Meyers Manx Buggy, but upgraded into the epitome of exclusiveness, luxury and superb craftsmanship. As such, this beach buggy isn’t just hard to come by because it’s limited-edition, but can be seen as a symbol of status.
Each Berluti buggy is handcrafted from a Volkswagen Beetle frame and motor, much like the 1964 original. With a shell of polyester replicating the original fiberglass bodyshell, it is also incredibly lightweight, at just 500 kg or approximately 1,100 pounds, and runs on an air-cooled 1600cc flat-four engine with a twin carburetor and 90 hp. Unlike the original, it has a roll protection structure that can double as surfboard stand.
The buggy features plenty of the signature printed canvas developed by Berluti head designer Kris Van Assche and most recently seen on the new line of luggage developed in partnership with Globe-Trotter. This being a made to order vehicle, future owners can opt to make theirs more bespoke with a choice of leathers and patinas.
And there will be plenty of leather on it: the steering wheel, the dashboard, the gear lever and the two seats are covered in monogrammed leather. The canvas soft-top and the removable luggage carrier are also finished in leather with the Berluti logo.
The Berluti beach buggy can be made to order and, if you have to ask how much it costs, you probably can’t afford it, as the old saying goes. As a matter of fact, Berluti hasn’t even released an estimated price for the base model.
