A family home doesn't need to look too fancy or combine complicated design hacks. The Kallaway isn't about unusual features or artistic style, yet it could be described as the perfect family house on wheels. This Aussie design reveals a down-to-earth approach that's highly practical, sustainable, and instantly likable.
The Kallaway is one of those clever designs that make the most of what's available in terms of space without going over the top. Boasting a nine-meter (29.5 feet) length and a height of a little over three meters (10.4 feet), this classic tiny house becomes remarkably spacious as if by magic.

Just by adding a second loft to the standard configuration, the Kallaway can turn into a welcoming haven that can accommodate up to six people – two in each of the loft rooms with queen-sized beds and two downstairs, on the convertible sofa in the living room.

This versatility in terms of accommodation is one of the features that makes it equally suitable for long-term living or as a vacation rental. Even before stepping inside, the Kallaway feels friendly and fun. The large sliding doors, beautifully framed with contrasting wood, create an instant connection to the outdoors.

A tiny deck with an optional awning can become the heart of an outdoor setup, perfect for those who want to enjoy spending time together in nature. The outdoor shower is a must for any vacation home, adding to this tiny abode's high functionality.

Inside, the Kallaway extends its hospitable vibe with a spacious living area. It's big enough to fit in a convertible sofa, while large windows keep it full of light and fresh air. The rustic wood fireplace in the corner looks bulky, but it's a welcome addition during cold evenings. Most tiny houses include the living room and the kitchen in an open-space area with no delimitations. Kallaway is one of the few where the staircase and a partial wall create separation and intimacy.

The staircase is also fitted with a beautiful wooden handrail and connects to the loft bedroom through a narrow walkway. The downstairs kitchen is surprisingly spacious for a house this size, with enough room left for the addition of a dining table. The L-shaped countertop also provides ample space for enjoying meals and can double as a breakfast bar – another functional feature that saves a lot of space. The kitchen comes with a large sink, a stove, and dedicated space for a full-size fridge. Customers can choose between an LPG or induction cooktop.

Storage, one of the critical elements for comfortable tiny living, gets plenty of attention with the Kallaway. The kitchen is particularly well organized, with cupboards and drawers. Still, additional storage solutions are carefully integrated throughout, including the staircase and the main loft bedroom.

A simple sliding door separates the kitchen from the bathroom, creating the illusion of an all-white wall that makes the kitchen feel much more spacious. The tiled bathroom is an elegant addition to the house, fitted with a walk-in shower, a vanity, and a standard toilet. Dimmable lighting, a modern reverse-cycle air conditioning system, and the loft skylights enhance the cozy atmosphere inside the Kallaway.

Folks at NJ Tiny Homes build all their models in Melbourne and, despite the remarkable variety of their portfolio, are ready to turn each one into an off-grid haven. If the Kallaway was designed to be the perfect family home, an off-grid setup would turn into an ideal solution for sustainable, eco-friendly living. The off-grid packages include everything from solar systems and generators to greywater systems, water storage tanks, composting toilets, and energy-efficient appliances.

The Kallaway is flexible in terms of pricing, as well. The one-loft option starts at AUD 125,000 ($83,550), including the trailer, while the two-loft version comes with an AUD 135,000 ($90,230) price tag.

This popular Australian tiny house brand was born from a dream – Nick wanted to build a family retreat by the beach for his family, one that would be both practical and budget-friendly. That became the beginning of NJ Tiny Homes, named after Nick's children, Natasha and Jaxx. With an extensive background in design and construction, plus several years of working on multiple projects overseas, Nick was the right person to help others to fulfill their tiny living dream.

Today, the Australian builder offers a remarkably-diverse range, extending from tiny homes on wheels (THOWs) to container homes, modular houses, and prefab houses, each with their particular advantages. Most importantly, all of them comply with Australian regulations and are based on a combination of modern equipment and building processes with natural, sustainably-sourced materials.

Tiny homes on wheels bring the added benefit of extensive mobility in addition to downsizing. Despite size limitations, their high versatility turns them into great choices even for larger families. The Kallaway is a mix of traditional and modern elements resulting in a very friendly yet reliable configuration.
