Mercedes is teasing the upcoming electric G-Class once again. The EQG is set to arrive in late 2024, and the carmaker pledges that it will get all of the off-road capabilities of the iconic model.
"The electric G-Class blends the best of all worlds - sophistication and advanced electric technology," reads the caption that accompanies three photos of the EQG. In the social media post, The model is shown in three different types of camouflage, all indicating that we are dealing with an electric model. All three of them have shown up before during public road testing, as spy shots revealed.

As previously seen, the off-roader comes with the angular shape that it always had, but Mercedes worked to optimize aerodynamics. That is a major factor for EVs, as it can have a serious impact on range. Therefore, the EQG is getting new wheels, which are aerodynamically optimized. Some slits will help the airflow around the angular body, and there will be a fully enclosed grille at the front end, flanked by the usual round LED headlights.

Yet, everything that is familiar to the fans of the legendary G-Class in terms of looks will keep its ground. This means that the door hinges will remain visible on the electric G as well, the turn indicators will remain mounted up on the hood, and the spare wheel case will be at the back. But the case will now have a new shape. Mercedes made it square to differentiate it from the ICE-powered variant, which should keep the round one. The famous click-clack door-shutting sound should also remain on the menu.

A new steering wheel will show up on board, as seen in the previous spy photos taken during a session of cold-winter testing. Mercedes will also come up with a redesigned center console with a new storage layout, as well as a new switchgear.

Future owners will benefit from the presence of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) assistant. There will also be the G-Turn button in there, which will activate the ability of the quad-motor G-Class to do the famous tank turn, something we have recently seen in the Zeekr 001 FR.

It does sound like "a real G," doesn't it? It does come with all the features that the G-Class with internal combustion engines has been carrying over since the first generation, which hit the market back in 1979, low-range gear ratios and lock differentials included.

What we know so far is that the electric off-roader will be powered by a quad-motor powertrain, with each of the motors engaging a wheel. The wheel should receive the lithium-ion battery of the EQS, with a capacity of 107.8 kWh. An optional battery pack, which uses silicon anode chemistry and provides a 20 to 40% increase in energy density, might as well be in the lineup.

New photos of the Mercedes EQG confirm that the model is inching closer to production. But we won't get to see it until late next year, when it will drop as a 2025 model year. Deliveries should start in the first quarter of 2025. An AMG version will also show up at a later date.
