Save for the exterior design, Mercedes completely reinvented the G-Class for the second generation that came out in 2018. The posh premium truck may look the same as its predecessor, bar the fresh LED head- and taillights and a few other tweaks, but it is all-new beneath the skin.
It features better everything, from the steering and suspension to the brakes, engines, and transmissions. It also has new tech features on the inside, like the MBUX infotainment system, boasts modern-day driving assistance items, and a plethora of premium materials. But make no mistake, it can still take on some arduous tracks, as it has a ladder frame construction.
Six years after it was launched at the North American International Auto Show in 2018, with the production taking place at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria, the current G-Wagen is driving off into the sunset. Mercedes will pull the plug on it, but there is a big catch here, as the model won't be dropped altogether. Instead, the three-pointed star will give it a mid-cycle refresh, which is expected to launch next year.
The information came in the form of a report published by Germany's Business Insider. The outlet quotes an internal letter sent by the car manufacturer, which reportedly reveals that the current G-Class will leave the assembly line in the first quarter of next year. An exact date for when Mercedes will pull the plug on this iteration hasn't been specified. But as we already told you, they won't kill it, as the facelift is around the corner.
In addition to the updated designs at the front and rear, which will probably allow it to fly under the radar for those who are not familiar with the brand's styling cues, as well as some possible upgrades beneath the skin and on the inside, the facelifted G-Wagen will be electrified. And we're not just talking about partial electrification, as a battery-electric derivative is set to join the lineup for the first time ever.
Christened the EQG, which brings it in line with the brand's other EVs, it will have a new grille with a closed-off design boasting a four-motor electric powertrain. One unit will power each wheel, enabling "enormous pulling power and controllability," Mercedes says, and the model will be capable of pulling tank-style turns.
Details surrounding the exact output and torque, as well as the capacity of the battery pack, range, and other data, will be announced in due course, likely during the grand unveiling or maybe a few days/weeks prior to that as part of the teasing campaign.
