Over the years, there have been plenty of rumors surrounding a smaller alternative to the iconic G-Class, and now that model has finally been confirmed. The confirmation came directly from Mercedes' CEO, Ola Kallenius, who briefly spoke about it during the unveiling of the CLA Concept at the 2023 Munich Motor Show in Germany.
In a short interview with CNBC, which was recently posted online, the brand's head honcho said the vehicle will be introduced in a few years, referring to it as the "Little G."

"We have something in store for G fans around the world. Actually, tonight we are going to announce that there will be a 'Little G,'" Kallenius said. "So, the daughter or son of the big G is also going to come to G fans around the world in a few years from now."

But what does "a few years from now" mean? The company's chief said they "haven't set a definitive date" yet. However, "if you're waiting for something good, it will be worth the wait," he added.

A few outlets have released official teaser images of the upcoming model, which were taken during the announcement at the Munich Motor Show. AutoExpress' picture shows a very boxy design that stays true to the one of the iconic G-Wagen. We can see a full-size spare wheel mounted on the tailgate and what appears to be a three-door design. Nonetheless, we could be wrong about the body style, as the three-pointed star brand could give it five doors and a very tiny cargo area that would be able to eat a few small bags.

Unofficial data claims the baby G-Wagen could be introduced in 2026. If that's the case, then we should start seeing mules testing on the road in the near future. Eventually, they will be turned into prototypes with their bodies wrapped in thick camouflage. It has been rumored that the baby G-Class could be underpinned by Mercedes' upcoming MMA architecture, sporting battery-electric power solely, and the 800-volt tech for quick charging times.

Another big unknown revolves around the actual size of the upcoming crossover/SUV. At first glance, it sounds like it could be similar to the Suzuki Jimny. However, certain reports state it might actually be significantly larger. Guess we will have to wait and see just how big the Baby G-Class will actually be and if it will launch with three or five doors. Let's hope it will still be a proper off-roading tool with the right mods and that the poor build quality that has struck the brand in recent years won't pose an issue here. So, are you excited about the iconic truck getting a smaller sibling, and would you buy one?
