Sustainable tourism is currently a rising trend in the travel industry, and it echoes on the hospitality scene, with hotel owners and entrepreneurs around the world making eco-consciousness one of their top priorities. DistrictHive, a small startup based in Granada, Spain, has designed an innovative autonomous podtel called the Colony that incorporates the most modern renewable technologies and offers a unique guest experience.
Perched on a plateau in the middle of the Gorafe desert of Granada, the Colony was built following the principles of minimalist living and experiential lifestyle. This novel podtel is essentially a luxurious tiny house crafted with natural and sustainable elements that help cut energy costs, lower the guests' carbon footprint, and overall be respectful of the surrounding desert ecosystem.

It was designed from the get-go as a state-of-the-art accommodation project meant to revolutionize the way people think about hotels. One of the major highlights of this eco-friendly tiny house is its self-sufficiency. It is a perfect fusion of sustainable ethos and cutting-edge technology, as it is capable of producing its own water by sucking moisture out of the air and generating its own electricity with the help of solar panels. It is also equipped with an incinerator toilet, so it needs no connections to the grid whatsoever.

Moreover, it comes with an energy storage system that allows it to remain functional even on cloudy days. As long as there is sun in the skies every four days, the pod can survive even in the harshest conditions as the batteries will store the solar energy and ensure the house's vital functions keep running.

Thanks to these innovative technologies that make it completely self-contained, the podtel can be installed anywhere in the world and subsequently removed with no harm caused to the environment. It consumes zero local resources while also encouraging guests to respect the surrounding nature and leave no trace behind.

Designed for the tourist of the future, the Colony also comes with smart features meant to make ] guests' stay as comfortable as possible. These features can be controlled by guests via an AI-powered app that lets them open the doors, adjust the inside temperature, dim the lights, control the mood settings, the sound, and even the aroma inside the pod. The app also controls all the devices inside the house and provides details on energy levels, solar production, water quality, and more.

Touted as a "luxurious human recharging sanctuary," the intelligent tiny home offers 484 square feet (45 square meters) of livable space, cleverly divided between a minimalist living room, an ingenious kitchen area, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Though it only has one bedroom, the Colony can actually accommodate up to six people, as a couple of additional beds can be pulled out in the lounge if necessary.

The ultra-modern interior has been designed with nature lovers in mind. As such, it boasts a biophilic design that nurtures the connection between occupants and nature. For instance, glass walls all over provide breathtaking views of the desert from every corner of the house. But this doesn't mean this rental house is suitable only for those who want to spend some days in the middle of nature. Actually, the contemporary design and luxurious amenities make it a sanctuary for social media fanatics, explorers, digital nomads, and traveling families alike.

The open-plan layout ensures a seamless transition between areas, with the bathroom and dedicated bedroom being the only spaces with increased privacy. The sumptuous living room has a comfy couch looking out over the amazing naturescapes, and a ceiling-high wardrobe that doubles as a diving wall between the lounge and the bedroom.

The full-width bottom drawer of this wardrobe pulls out to reveal an extra sleeping space. Two steps next to it lead to the bedroom, which is incredibly minimalist, with just the double bed flanked by panoramic windows.

The kitchen is ultra-luxurious with multi-functional cabinets and plenty of storage space, as well as modern appliances, including a two-hob cooktop, an oven, a sink, and more. Standout features in this area are the modular kitchen island with incorporated benches that pull out when it's time to eat and a unique vending machine with small lockers that contain snacks and other bonus items you can buy in-app to unlock.

The bathroom is equally luxurious, with a full-size shower cabin, an incinerating toilet, and a stylish vanity with basin sink.

Everything inside is in dark tones of grey and black, giving the interior an industrial vibe, but the designers' intention with the color choice and the inclusion of extensive glazing throughout was to let the surrounding environment shine.

Outside the module, there are decks for stargazing and a covered pergola that invites guests to spend time outdoors. The decks are installed on hammock-like structures that seem to float above the ground.

According to DistrictHive, the Colony podtel is "a fully industrialized construction that is offered finished, transported to the site and in a few hours is ready to be used. It does not touch the ground on which it sits, has no foundations, and does not require any type of channeling, piping, or sanitation. The support system developed has six legs that, like a spaceship just landed on Mars, rest on the ground."

Focused on sustainability, eco-friendliness, and a biophilic design, DistrictHive's innovative podtel creates a comfortable, luxurious, and inviting space that has the potential to offer memorable experiences that will stay with the guests long after they leave.
