Tesla will soon deliver the first Cybertruck units to their customers during an event on November 30. People still wait for their official invitation to arrive this week, but there's another important event that makes the news. Based on a recent rumor, Tesla has already started delivery production of the Cybertruck.
Tesla Cybertruck is the most anticipated vehicle launch of this decade. The electric pickup is utterly late on the market that it basically created when it was announced in 2019. Since then, other carmakers launched electric pickups, from the monster GMC Hummer EV to the utilitarian Ford F-150 Lightning Pro. Although the Tesla Cybertruck promised to bring revolutionary features, it will have a hard time catching up with its rivals, however unsuccessful they proved so far.

Although both GM and Ford pledged to lead the EV pickup segment with their electric pickups, they recently announced they would slow down their EV programs. So far, Rivian, with the R1T production in full swing, is the player to beat in the segment. Tesla could take the market by storm, provided that the Cybertruck pricing is right and can produce it in significant numbers. So far, it doesn't look like this is the case.

Tesla will indeed have a delivery event this year, as promised earlier. Still, it looks like this will be a paper launch, similar to the Tesla Semi delivery event on December 1, 2022. Elon Musk made it clear that production of the Cybertruck is difficult, given the stainless steel body and the unique characteristics of Tesla's electric pickup truck. If that's the case, we can expect up to a dozen Cybertrucks to be delivered on November 30, with Tesla employees and insiders as the first customers.

This is not unusual for a new model with minimal production, so we're not surprised. Hopefully, Tesla will ramp up Cybertruck production faster than it let everyone know during the third quarter earnings call. The limited number of Cybertrucks planned for delivery could also explain why Tesla is only now commencing the production of its pickup truck.

For new models, customer production usually starts months before the first deliveries so that carmakers have time to build enough inventory. It's a different matter for startups, which are eager to begin sales as soon as possible to help with the cash flow. Tesla is not a startup anymore, but it has adopted a similar strategy. Not because it's cash-strapped (it is not) but because the anticipation is so high that it cannot delay the moment any longer without destabilizing its market position.

The news that Tesla has started delivery production at Giga Texas was unexpected, but it makes sense. The source of this information has not always been reliable, although it sometimes offered critical insight into Tesla operations. In this case, the Cybertrucks that will be handed during the delivery event must be built sometime before the ceremony. And as we've seen that current prototypes are still not up to snuff from a build quality standpoint, Tesla better gets its act together with the delivery production.
