It has been a busy weekend for the Tesla prototypes. Two of them were put through their paces in the off-road in the Tahoe National Forest, California. The mud made them almost unrecognizable. If it wasn’t for their unmistakable angular shape.
The duo ended up on social media after their off-road adventure. According to the original Facebook post, uploaded in a public group dedicated to the model, the prototypes drove over some Level 4 trails during the day.

Some Facebook users jumped into the comments section to point out that the one shown in the photos was not a Level 4 trail, but more of a Level 1 dirt road. Level 1 is the easiest of the off-roading levels. Rachel Robert Landon, the one who posted the photos on Facebook, explained that the photos were taken after the off-roading session was completed, not on the actual Level 4 trails.

Very rough terrain, water crossings of over 24 inches, large rocks of over 15 inches, mud, and steep inclines would make up a Level 4 course. The two prototypes don’t seem equipped for such surfaces, though.

That would be similar to what other Tesla prototypes were spotted doing last week at Hollister Hills SVRA near Monterey, California. Both of them drove at a very slow pace, as if the drivers were trying to check some setups on the vehicles or were simply afraid not to wreck anything.

There is no video of the Tesla Cybertrucks off-roading this time, so we can’t tell how fast or slow the prototypes drove through the muddy terrain. What we do know is that they ended the course covered in mud, so the first destination should be a car wash.

"They asked us not to post any photos of the interior or a video of them off-roading," Rachel Robert Landon wrote in the caption accompanying the photos.

Not much is known about the off-road capabilities of the Tesla Cybertruck. But we do know that it comes with a ground clearance of roughly 16 inches (406 millimeters), an approach angle of 33 degrees, and a departure angle of 28 degrees.

We are to find out more on November 30, when Tesla scheduled the first handover, when the first customers will get their Cybertrucks during a ceremony set to take place at the Gigafactory in Texas, where the electric pickup truck entered production. But volume production is set to start in 2024.

Until that happens, the ones off-roading in the Tahoe National Forest and uploaded on Facebook were far from being the only ones spotted this weekend. Cybertruck prototypes keep being photographed on public roads as well. This past weekend, the Tesla Chief Design was seen driving the first-ever Stealth Matte Black Cybertruck in Santa Monica.
