Tesla pushed a surprise update for its vehicles boasting the latest cameras and computer dubbed Hardware 4. The 2023.26.11 build activates FSD Beta just days after Elon Musk said the focus would be put on Hardware 3-equipped units. Here's what's going on.
After live demoing the out-of-beta and neural networks-only Full Self-Driving V12, Tesla's CEO said that newer EVs boasting the latest ADAS-enabling equipment known as Hardware 4 would have to wait "at least six months" before seeing the software suite fully unlocked for their cars.
This came as a blow to those enthusiasts who wanted to continue experiencing the Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) on their newer cars. We recently showed you a 2023 Model Y owner who subscribed to FSD Beta using referral credits. He was allowed to install the suite but could not use it in its entirety. Others faced the same issue and were disheartened to learn that they spent money on a product that didn't do what they thought it would.
All those complaints and criticism must have forced the EV maker's hand because most Hardware 4-equipped vehicles were prompted to update a couple of hours ago. The 2023.26.11 software version introduced FSD Beta V11.4.4. That's the build that promised to fix handling on narrow, unmarked roads and introduced changes that further enhanced the detection of vulnerable road users like pedestrians.
The latest FSD Beta version being rolled out to Hardware 3-equipped cars is V11.4.7.
Apparently, when Elon Musk suggested that Tesla units with Hardware 4 would remain behind Hardware 3 vehicles for at least another half a year, he referred to the outdated FSD Beta version they would eventually get.
It's not the first time that Tesla's CEO makes confusing remarks. Back when smoke from Canadian wildfires reached New York, the executive said that Model 3s and Model Ys didn't have the innovative bioweapon defense mode A/C system. Even though they have smaller HEPA filters, the budget-friendly vehicles do boast that feature. Besides aggressively filtering the outside air, when that mode is activated, the cabin is positively pressurized, lessening the chance of pollutants reaching people or pets inside the car.
After installing the newest update, owners of Model Y, Model S, and Model X units with Hardware 4 will be able to take advantage of FSD Beta. Model 3 units still come with Hardware 3 from the factory. They might be updated to the next-generation internals after Project Highland is officially launched and put into production.
Keep in mind that this suite is a Level 2 SAE J3016 autonomous driving system. That means the driver is always in control. Tesla explicitly tells drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel even when FSD Beta is running.
