The Mazda6 (also known as Atenza) is a tragic story underlying the perils for classic passenger cars across the new landscape of the current automotive industry, which is focused mostly on crossovers, SUVs, and trucks.
Introduced in 2002 as the successor to the long-lived 626 (Capella) model, the Mazda6 mid-size nameplate was produced across just three generations – initially as a four-door sedan, five-door liftback, and station wagon throughout the first two iterations, then solely as a saloon and estate.
The current third generation was introduced in 2012 at the Moscow International Automobile Salon in sedan form and the 2012 Paris Motor Show as a station wagon. Still, with the focus on CUVs, SUVs, and trucks, it was left without a proper successor even 12 years later. Additionally, it has also slowly bowed out of various regions, including North America, and most recently was also dropped from Mazda's home market at the end of January 2024.
That's a sad outcome for a big and elegant saloon, but luckily, earlier this month, the rumor mill uncovered a filling with the European Union Intellectual Property Office that should make fans optimistic about the perspectives of a new Mazda6 generation. More precisely, the trademark application is for a Mazda 6e, meaning that it will be in some electrified form if the model returns.
Keep in mind that it doesn't automatically mean all-electric power as Mazda also has mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid e-Skyactiv powertrains, and those could easily be adapted from the CX crossovers to a new Mazda 6e. Of course, given all the speculation, the imaginative realm of digital car content creators is not too far away with its vision for an all-new Mazda 6e.
Meet Vince Burlapp (aka vburlapp on social media or burlappcar.com), a prolific virtual artist who loves to dream of all the latest models across the wide-ranging automotive realm, and the pixel master has quickly envisioned the potential stylish looks of the Mazda 6e with obvious inspiration from the latest models in the lineup like Mazda's CX-60, CX-70, or CX-90. Of course, it is only natural to assume that Mazda could bring a new Mazda6 using the new rear- and all-wheel drive with a longitudinal engine layout platform called 'Large Product Group.'
With it, the model could arrive on the European market with no less than three electrified powertrains – the 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv D inline six with 251 horsepower and 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv G packing 280 or 341 hp plus a 16-hp electric boost, as both inline-six mills are mild hybrids. Even better, there's also a 2.5-liter inline-four PHEV model boasting a combined system output of 323 hp and 500 Nm plus a large 17.8-kWh battery pack for short zero-emission trips.
