Just a week separates us from the premiere of the latest movie in the Star Wars franchise, The Rise of Skywalker. That means from now on we should expect a flood of related news, products, and events for this highly anticipated film.
Back in October, Porsche announced it has partnered with Lucasfilm to create a fantasy starship design that is to show at the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles. Now, two months later, we get news the design and build are done.
Porsche released the first official images of the starship it calls Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter, one that is clearly intended to fight on the side of the rebels. A scale model of it, measuring 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length, will be on-site in LA.
At first glance, the design does not appear to be very Porsche-like, but it does look extremely Star Wars-like. Closer inspection of the photos in the gallery above reveals connections with the cars made by the Germans.
At the front there are the air inlets and the four-point daytime running lights (yes, even fighters need headlights) that have been drawn to mimic those of the electric Taycan.
The overall shape, says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style at Porsche, is meant to remind us of the design of the 911 and the Taycan, and the rear apparently pays tribute to the same two models.
“The design of the spaceship is harmoniously integrated into the Star Wars film world while at the same time demonstrating clear analogies with the characteristic Porsche styling and proportions,” the executive says.
“The basic shape of the cabin, which tapers towards the rear, and a highly distinctive topography from the cockpit flyline to the turbines establish visual parallels with the iconic design of the 911 and the Taycan. The very compact layout conveys dynamism and agility, lending emphasis to the Porsche design features mentioned.”
For Star Wars fans though, it will not be the parallels with production cars that would make or break the Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter, but whether or not it blends in the Star Wars universe.
